Hi

Was wondering what I could do about this. I just got this disgusting SMS that reads: "Hey babes, as a present for being an adult client I masturbated on DVD, just 4 u! To claim sms KIM to 42654. R30/sms. Sms STOP to 31335 to OPT out"

From the number 0820070120.

Note, I do not visit pr0n sites or give our my cell number to normal websites.

I remember there been some reward for spammers... do you recon this is a case? Is this even legal?

Name: Marketel (Pty) Ltd
VAS Rate: R30.00
Telephone: 011 234 4080
Other contact methods:
Visit the website.

Have phoned them, and asked... they said my number was on an adult database.. I was like wtf? How did it get on.. they said they didnt know and would find out. I did record the call and informed them I was recording the call. Keeping all evidence.

Weird, have you given your number to any dodgy (non-porn) places offline?

Nope, not that I am aware of. Skypeout are the last people to get that info. I almost never fill in my cell number for a website.

Maybe someone with a similar number to yours entered yours by mistake by mistyping one digit etc. OR maybe they just spam known number ranges, doesn't exactly look the most legit company.

Dont they have to prove I opted into sex related cell spam? IE, they have to show how I got onto the database?

There are cash rewards now for busting this type of thing. Profit incentive works.

hey wiz

marketel are one of the bigger wireless application service providers - on the face of it this is spam...there would need to be an opt-in or recent commercial relationship with the recipient

there may also be issues with the adult nature and no age verification

if u want to pursue go to www.waspa.org.za and look through the code of conduct (go by the headings) - then use their online complaint form to lodge a complaint

//if the matter is referred to me...;)

Hehe, I will do. I am just giving them time to respond so I can hear their side of the story and from there I will take the appropriate actions. Thanks for all the nfo.

Wiz

Got some spammy sex rubbish a long while ago... but it stopped as they realized I wasn't going to view their rubbish.

You'll even get their rubbish SMS'es at the oddest times, at midnight and some weird times...

They should give you details on how they obtained your number.

It's good you're recording and keeping all calls, as this might come in use one day.

Hope you win your case.

Regards

Libs
