I bought 30 rands of airtime which i converted to 200mb of data.......
I previously suspected that cell c charged a higher rate then what they advertise...
with the 200 mb i decided to download 103 mb using a download manager......

My usual connection speed is 33 kbs,
but thursday last week my connection speed was
bouncing between 12kbs and 15kbs on the download manager

The result is that my manager failed to download the file, which resulted
in only 17mb being downloaded. When i check my balance it reflects that
i have no data left..

So i do the natural thing which is to query my provider... which resulted in
them telling me that i used 200 mb. I would understand using 200 mb if i
used a windows Os, that usually run updates in the background.

I use a linux os so that i control my data usuage, so that i don't have to
run updates every week.

I was connected for only 85.7 minutes

So i did internet download calculation of how much data i can
download with 28 kbs connection, it would take me hours 30:minute 51:second 51
to download a 200 mb file

If any one can come with suggestion of how i can finish 200 mb of data with slow connection
please be my guest...

If the cell c person on this forum can assist......

cell c disappearing data

I bought 30 rands of airtime which i converted to 200mb of data.......
I previously suspected that cell c charged a higher rate then what they advertise...
That why i stayed in front of my pc to confirm if the was a problem with how my sim is charged.
the duration of 3g modem usage was 85.7 minutes, which after my account reflected that i had zero
balance(meaning that i had used up all my 200 mb of data) my connection speed was bouncing between 13 and 15 kbs

My usual connection speed is 33 kbs, and last week thursday when i tried to download a
103 mb file from my 200 mb recharged sim card my connection bounced between 13 and 15 kbs

The result is that after 85.7 minutes my manager failed to download the file because my sim card
ran out of data when i tried to download a 103 mb file, with 200 mb data that i just bought.

The thing i can't get is how i used 200 mb, when the only application running in my linux os
was the download manager which was only able to download 18 mb

What i need to know is how 183 mb disappeared...
after 85.7 minutes

I called the cell c call center, to find out how to sort this out.
Their reply was that i used 200mb in 85.7 with a connection speed of an average of 13 kbs
Even after the tech guys had a report done on the modem.

The result i get from internet calculator is that it would take me
30 hours : 51 minute :51 second to download a file with 28kbs connection

So how did i manage to use 200 mb with connection speed that averages 13kbs after 85.7 minutes
with only the download manager running.

My cell c ref number is : 1685493 for this query

WTF has you comment to do with the topic? Get your stuff agtermakar or you'll get a thread derail warning! Use PM for unrelated issues.
@Nolo make sure nothing is downloading (or uploading) in the back ground. Logon the CellC site and check your available data balance before you start any major download.

Why you don't check modem statistics? Or Dial up connection status general tab?
In your story anything could happen; automatic updates for the operating system, antivirus or other installed software. This extra traffic will never show in your download manager. It is why your calculation is not valid, sorry.
I guess you don't control your data traffic at alll.

Well to answer your question i don't have any automatic updates in my os or antivirus....
the only application running was the download manager.

If you want to do any updates in my os you have to manually install them
that the reason i moved to this os, to get maximum use off my data on things i want .

that why i want to figure out what happened to the 183 mb i did not use

Not sure that moving just to other OS prevents you from automatic updates or other uncontrolled traffic. All I say you need to take control over traffic and don't assume that your OS prevents you from automatic updates. I am sure you can query your network stack for traffic used.
On Windows we have nice ginggs application. But you can query modem and gather all information desired. I am not sure what commands are used in MDMA and which modem you use, but for Huawei modems look for the following AT commands:
^DSFLOWCLR - statistics reset
^DSFLOWQRY - traffic query
Above commands for off-line gathering statistics of the last session.
For online current connection monitoring watch messages on the diagnostic port every few seconds.
^DSFLOWRPT -traffic reporting
You need to enable unsolicited report control with command ^CURC to get these messages displaed.
