Hi,

Will the cellc usb modem work with a VM sim?

TIA

Works perfectly - I am using it at the moment! Get the modem and the Virgin SIM. Install the software, plug in the modem and change it's connection string to At+cgdcont=1,"IP","Vdata" and connect...

Got mine for exactly R1300 from a Cell C store about a month ago. Worth every penny!

Are they just EDGE or 3G/HSDPA too? Know it doesn't matter now but might in future.

Virgin Mobile SIM and CellC Red USB GPRS/EDGE Modem

The CellC USB GPRS/EDGE Modem does work with a Virgin Mobile SIM.

Install software first
Restart Windows XP
Put VM SIM in Modem
When XP has settled down plug in modem with SIM in
Windows XP will mention it has found new hardware (Sharkpod MC75 Modem)
Follow the instructions in the Adobe PDF document to install the driver. Repeat for each USB port you want to use the modem in.
What they dont tell you is what to configure the modem (start/settings/control panel/phone and modems - for classic windows menus
Select modem
After modem plugged in select Sharkpod (all instances) and put in the advanced settings in extra init strings you need: at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata","",0,0, (vdata is the VM APN)

Click Red Icon to start software (it really stands out on my PC - quite good)
Select Tools/Options
Put in VM SMS Centre Number of +27741000050
Detect modem
Click OK
Check grey status bar at bottom of software dashboard.
The modem must be connected and registered on network with a GSM type mode
Goto airtime and check balance - if enoughgo back to red connect tab and select
Click the connect tab under connection stats and it should connect.

This is long but I hope it works.

;)

CellC Edge Modem/VM SIM

The Cellc VM SIM combo is good value for $$$.

VM data rate is R0.50 per MB and new airtime can be bought prepaid. And one is mobile. Other mobile rates are comparatively exepnsive when contract details and hardware and out of package costs are considered in conjunction with sustained data rates I have observed from friends and realatives who use them (3G/HSDPA, iBurst, Sentech, etc)

The CC Modem is R1300 - expensive perhaps but cheaper than a HSDPA card or iBurst modem (not sure about sentech right now???)

I think a good backup option for say those in Knysna who have WiFI or those with ADSL.

Just use WIFi in town and out of town use CC Edge Modem with VM SIM.

Speeds not very fast - dependant on network strength.

Doing iBurst Speed check yielded about 6kbit/sec to about 100kbit/sec with network strengths in EDGE area in Umhlanga of about 20% to about 70%.

:)

You can get a HSDPA/3G/EDGE/GPRS card from MTN for free on a R49pm contract or +-R1299 on a R9.99 contract.

If you are in a area that is likely to have 3G in the near future, then this is the best option. Virgins 128k Sim works with MTN E620 card.

I would not go for the USB modem unless this is the only way to connect.

I'm in Velddrif in the WC, we dont have edge let alone 3G. Our signal is also very poor here, and VC said they would install another tower here about 2 months ago. I have been at them to fulfill their word but so far nothing has materialised. Talk isa cheap it seems!

I want to use a data card on my PC, how much is the adaptor?

Sorry to hear that.

Then you have a better chance with VC or MTN because Cell C will be far behind if the 2 big operators do not have anything there.
