I have a nokia 6101 with the required cable, i also received the software disc with the cable. After installing the software on to my computer, my cellphone was linked to the computer, but i am having a problem with the connection to the internet.

When i attempt to connect, the message i receive is that there is "no modem found":confused". I followed the instructions in the manual up to the point where you select the modem under the phone and modem options in my control panel, but it appeares that the nokia manufactures software is suppose to be detected, which is not the case.

My question is whether or not there are settings on my cellphone that need to be changed?

Secondly, was the manufactures information suppose to be on the disc or am i suppose to get the manufactures software for the nokia modem else where.

Is there something else i am doing wrong with the connection regarding the modem of the said cellphone? How should i go about getting my computer to access the internet through my cellphone?

Nokia PC Suite

What is the best way to obtain the latest version of Nokia's PC suite? Can i obtain it on the internet, or where can i get the disc?

First of all what cable were you supplied?

It must be a CA-42 for the 6101. Sadly many suppliers will provide whatever "fits" but of course these do not work! The DKU-2, DKU-5 & CA-53 all look much the same and all will "fit" the handset but only the CA-42 will work with the Nokia 6101.

You can get PC Suite from Nokia's main website www.nokia.com but you'll need to navigate from there to the relevant download site. Just be aware that its a mighty big download if you are not already connected by some sort of broadband! If the handset came with a CDROM (I don't think that the 6101 does), then the copy of PC Suite (although not the latest) will work with your handset. You can always download the update later.

The CA-42 is a Serial to USB cable, so it doesn't behave like the DKU-2 on say a Nokia 6230i which is true UBS/USB.

The other alternative is to use a IRDA (infra-red) connection, this a lot less painless than getting a CA-42 to work first time! :)

If you actually do have a CA-42 it will have come with a CDROM with all drivers and PC Suite already on it!

I have the CA-42 cable, but it appears that the disc that came with the cable didn't have the modem drivers, but i downloaded them from the nokia website.

If it still doesn't work, i will be back.

Modem Addition

I downloaded the modem drivers for the Nokia 6101. The phone is connected to the computer and all the functions via the cable work, except for connecting to the internet.

I then went to my control panel and opened phone and modem options, where i manually selected the Nokia modem settings that i copied to my flash disk, the install section went as far as to select the required nokia modem drivers.

However once i opened the selected drivers, the message i received is that the selected items digital signature is not approved, be that as it may the adding wizard gave me the option to proceed to the next step, where you have to select the ports.

At this point i cannot select or alter the port and the wizard does not allow me to proceed to the next step of the adding process.

So my problem is still that i am unable to get the computer to select the modem of the cellphone.

Question then is what am i doing wrong?

Am i suppose to alter the settings on windows to accept digital signatures that aren't appoved\signed and where? Or is there something else i should be doing to complete the adding of the modem?

Many manufactures use drivers that have not been digitally signed mainly because Microsoft take so long to do such things!

If you know and trust the source, ignoring the "error" message is fine.

I had a user today with problems setting up a Nokia 6101.

Here is the cure:

1: Ensure that the CA-42 cable drivers & PC Suite are installed.
2: Use "Device Manager" and note what COM port the CA-42 is using.
3: Open Control Panel and select "Phone and Modems"
4: Click on the "Modems Tab"
5: Then click on ADD at the bottom and ensure that you check the "Do not detect my modem" box!
6: Now click Next and select Nokia as the Manufacturer and 6101 Cable as the modem.
7: Click Next
8: Use "Selected Ports" and choose the port you noted in step 2 above.
9: Click Next and you should be done!

You should see the Nokia 6101 Modem listed in Device Manager and be able to query the modem in diagnostics.
