Cellphone poses lightning risk

Paranoia really is rampant in todays society.
The physicians, who work at Northwick Park Hospital in northwest London, say they have found three press reports of people being killed by lightning while using their cellphones outdoors.
"And in other news a person was killed today in an accident by a drunk driver while wearing clothes. Coincidence? I think not!"
Really, how many people are struck by lightning while not using a cellphone? A lot more. By that reasoning it can also indicate that talking on a cellphone will protect you from lightning since there are only three reported cases.

It has more to do with the fact that the cellphone causes the lightning to go into you instead of just flowing over you and just giving you some bad burns. :D

Yeah and also one more fact. The most dangerous place to be is in a bed, most people die in beds of course. So you better not be sleeping in a bed for fear of dying :P

That's why I use a super comfy lazyboy type chair in front of my pc. just tilt it back and zzzzzzzzzz.... :p

First cancer, then radiation, now lightning? Give me a break. :) Someone's service was more than likely suspended for non payment or something and have a grudge again...

Has any scientific experiment been carried out to support this statement?

Oh, puhlease.

Let us imagine the circumstances. Why would someone be outside in the rain using their phone? They are lost, their car has broken down, they went hiking and got lost etc.

In other words, these people are ALREADY in a position where the chance of getting hit by lightning is high. Being is distress, is it any wonder they are on their cell, calling someone?

It would be so very nice if journalists acted responsibly before shooting their mouths off in yet another attempt at tabloid sensationalism. Thank you.

This article is pure sensationalism by journos who don't have any grasp of scientific subjects.

Lightning always strikes the highest point. How many times are cellphone masts struck? Not often. It only happened twice in my 5 year career in telecoms and both cases happened in particularly severe storms.

whatever... the same applies to doing anything in lightning interrupted inclement weather, including playing golf, fishing, rock climbing, sky diving, talking to your neighbour over the wall, painting the roof, etc etc etc...

This really is not even newsworthy

Swimming pools dangerous!

A man in Kempton Park drowned while swimming in his pool yesterday. His distraught wife is claiming damages, stating that if her husband had been watching golf on TV, he would not have drowned.

See, I can be a journalist too. :D
