This has been made possible by the increasingly purposeful steps government is taking to open the telecoms market to competition. Already there are positive signs emerging, the most recent being Telkom’s decision to slash internet and international call prices.

While I am glad that access cost to internet services will be reduced slightly come 1st August 2006, it amazes me how the media is completely overlooking the fact that costs associated with access to a service and costs associated to using a service are two completely separate issues.

More people may now be tempted to get ADSL or migrate to a faster package. ISDN clients will receive lower monthly rentals for the service. But actually using the internet will not be any cheaper than it has been for last 8 months. How can this in any way be seen as a "positive sign"? :confused:
