Cellular operator targets fixed-line internet market

Good.

Nothing like a spot of competition... :D

Put on simmer and leave for 4 months... more interesting things will follow :D

"Data traffic in South Africa is growing at a rate that can't be sustained by the current transmission capacity,"

Erm... and Telkom would let us believe otherwise? I'm getting confused signals here...

Vodacom chief executive Alan Knott-Craig said the company had been competing with Telkom since the beginning.

Competing with the company that owns half of your company?

Telkom increased asymmetric digital subscriber line subscriber numbers by 78.1 percent to 255 633. It is targeting 420 000 by the end of March next year.

Even with the price cut to basic ADSL being an additional R200-250 for existing consumers (cause line rental gives nothing and and I'd say R250 since u need minimum 2.5GB I find) the cost is still prohibitive. R250 is a lot of money, I'd say another price cut or so to either drop rental entirely or to R50-75 and bandwidth cheaper(tho i don't think this will make a as big impact as rental diminishing to nothing for new user sign ups, if basic cost is about R75/2.5GB) and dial up will die out. Anyways that means they want a growth of about 64%? is it just me or are they lowering expectations?
