Cellular operators' mammoth task won't draw sympathy

Screw them.

What is the most important contact detail needed to get more information from somebody - their telephone number. So the cellphone operators can just send SMSs or call all the prepaid numbers, requesting the required information. Hell, they can even set up a website where people can fill in all their details themselves.

You have to povide original documents or certified copies. This is going to be another major pain like FICA. That piece of idiocy inconvenienced millions of people.

I have no sympathy for these companies whining about spending a measly few hundred million out of their massive profits, but on the other hand they should not be required to pay for the equipment. Government wants to install spy equipment so they should pay for it. The registration of users is particularly useless so those who voted yes to the law should pay out of their own pocket for it.

If the law stated all NEW SIMS's being activated required this details, it might have been workable.

At the typical churn rates for pre-paid, 50% of all pre-paid would be properly registered within a year of two.

Criminals prefer I believe a new card without a call history - meaning that long working prepaid accounts could be considered safe!
