Hey everybody. I was just hoping to get a few opinions from everyone on which option they would advise or prefer.
Getting a new Sony Z1 (in purple) in December as a once off purchase, but while looking at all the options for actual cellular providers only two stand out as being worthwhile.

#1: Cheap, best value for money MTN contract available (topup 50 I think? Please advise if not) along with Afrihost for data.
Comes out to about 200 a month with a 5GB data value, R50 airtime and who cares about SMS.
Pros: Afrihost connection, month to month billing, LTE access.
Cons: Very few minutes compared to option #2, unsure about rollover for unused minutes.

#2: Telkom Mobile Smartplan 100 contract (with some sneakyness).
169 a month over two years, but subsidized via the sale of the included S3 mini which makes the contract much less expensive and grants extra data.
Includes 100 minutes, free Telkom-Telkom calls (12 months), 150MB all network data, and 5GB of Telkom only data.
Pros: Significantly cheaper due to phone sale. Many more minutes and some free calls. Good rollover available
Cons: No LTE access (they use only 2300 MHz I believe, which Z1 doesn't support). Locked into a 24 month contract.

Both have similar coverage where needed so no real compromise there either way.
Large motivator for MTN/Afrihost is the LTE access and not being locked in. And this MTN Zone which supposedly discounts you for certain things? How does that work?

Many thanks for time taken to advice a fellow forum member.

go for TM , i love my s3 mini deal , using it atm. sold my s3 mini for 2200 next day.

Tm comes with 10gb wifi data also.

You dont need LTE im on mifi 21mps modem , i always get around 10mps speedtest, xperia z1 should get even more.

Sounds good, sadly my only gripe with the TM option is the speed since here in pta my dongle never goes above 3mbps even though I know it could. If it got 10 I doubt I'd have any problems with going for option nr1 honestly.

Ehhh what I think I might do is get a month or two on MTN to test what I actually get and see if the LTE is utilized much, then get a TM SIM to test the connection at the places I frequent to see the speeds before deciding.

Thanks for the vote. If anybody else want's to join in they are welcome

Sorry - only saw this now. Why only those two?

I would go for Cell C or as you mentioned, MTN with Afrihost Data.

Cell C network quality is very low in the area I live unfortunately and have had a few bad experiences in the past. TM is a complete unknown to me though so they are basically neutral as far as opinion goes.

Aha! I see :)

Oh well. I don't know how important data is for you - but if it is, MTN with AH might be better. Personally, I've never been on Telkom Mobile, but I have heard some great things :)

I've also heard some good things about TM and the ability to subsidize the contract like that makes it a much better option than any normal contract I feel. Sadly due to some speed issues and lack of LTE I might end up going with the MTN and AH at the end, though I will be doing a test on both.

Cell C quality is poor in the entire PTA region. Last time I was there it was very frustrating.
