Hi there,

Asking for a friend, she lives in Centurion and is on Metrofibre, during peak hours their fibre line goes horrible, the issues start normally around 7pm and around 9.30pm it goes back to normal.

MTR's show the fibre network pings instead of being arounds 1-5ms are around 80 to 90ms but it only occurs during this period, during the day and after 9.30 it is perfect.

She has had metrofibre come out as well as logged constant tickets with her ISP but they can find nothing at fault since their ISP and Metrofibre don't provide testing after hours when they have the issues.

IPERFS show the line throughput is fine and there is no packet loss on the line either, the line runs at near max speed and downloads and uploads are not affected. Streaming is not affected as well so it just seems like a huge increase of latency which is making gaming very difficult.

Anyone else experiencing this or have experienced this with Metrofibre?

Who is the ISP?
Real Broadband Solutions they reselling a Metrofibre product, if i look at who owns the IP its Metro, there was a huge outage in Centurion and the thing came right and their line was fine but now its gone to the dogs again :/ it came right just before they were going to cancel

Not having that issue in Lonehill at the moment.

In Early 2018, they had a firewall issue at Hetzner that made latency to JHB servers around 60ms instead of 2-4ms. I contacted support via email & sent them the traceroutes - they managed to solve the problem based on those. Hope this helps.

Thanks i will pass this on, i have been helping a lot with the testing and getting her to send through the right tests but between the ISP and Metro they seem useless :/

I am on Metrofibre in Centurion and I don't have any issues. I am not with Real Broadband Solutions though, so I don't know if there is any differences.

HI I know exactly what you mean it's very random when it happens I'm with metrofibre in Port Elizabeth and vodacom as the isp my ping goes from around 30ms to 900ms at completely random times yet my download and upload speeds are unaffected I also noticed my jitter is sometimes 300ms on a wired connection I have been having this problem for months and the isp seems to not understand the concept of latency and jitter since they always just say sir the download and upload speed seem fine is there anything else I can help you with? I think metrofibre has a major issue on how they route their lines since this kind of inconsistencies on a fibre connection is unheard-of.

With open access networks the problem can be on either side of the interconnect but it is more likely on the ISP side. It is much easier to resolve issues when the ISP is related to the FNO, for example in this case Metrofibre FTTH, Aitsa, or Gigago.

The ISP in this case is selling a Metrofibre product the IP that is given to them is a Metrofibre IP. She has been logging tickets with them from like Jan 5th to Jan 25th then there was a huge outage and things were fine and now again its started. She has cancelled with the ISP and is moving to Cool Ideas where I am sure she will get actual support.

I also want to cancel but vodacom wants to charge me R500 for the router then really bad service

I have a friend in PE who is with Metro and Axxess and she doesn't have those issues you mentioned so could possibly be Vodacom

I am in Montana and have the same issue with MFN. My local latency in games jump to over 120ms and my International speeds drop to sub 10Mbps (on a 100Mbps line).

Connect to the ONT direct and test.

My experience is that the line tests are fine direct to the ONT but the issue occurs when connected to the router.

Best to rule that out.

Told her to do all that and gone through all the basic tests but the issue is its only between say like 7pm and 9.30pm her latency shoots up and its both local and international the rest of the day everything is fine. They replaced the router a few months back too so its a newish one but yea only issues during peak hours rest of the day everything is fine and its only 2 people on a 100meg line both have same issues as well as via WiFi so it's not cables or anything like that

Where in Centurion are they?

I had an issue similar via Wi-Fi and resolved it by having the router scan the Wi-Fi channels every 90 seconds so I stay on the best channel at all times.
