Yep, I work on rural prison projects. I walk into the cells among the inmates and never get stared down or a weird vibe because they KNOW we're there to make life better for them. Also, I have photos of the prisoners, unchained, outside the perimeter busy working while the guards are lurking under a tree and not watching them. They have no intention of running away as they get their 3 meals a day and a warm bed and roof over their heads. Plus they're gaining skills working in the kitchen / construction sections.

Also remember Voicy, that prisoners are classified or graded and only certain prisoners will therefore be allowed to work at certain jobs and outside the prison perimeters.
 
we should get our prisoners to work fixing potholes, building stadiums highways, collect garbage when there is a strike, etc all at gunpoint, that way they do all the hard manual dirty work and our taxes are not wasted, instead of them getting DSTV and stuff, let them learn how to farm and grow their own food, where bulk goes to orphanages and poor, etc. surely this will make them not want to go back again.

There is a sheriff in California that does this, and prisoners will not go to his prison

I saw that program. The sheriff said they don't get TV or salt for their food, they are not here on holiday. Thats the right attitude to have, i agree prisoners should work to make society a better place instead of wasting tax payers money.

South Africa is a signatory to a particular international convention (of which I momentarily forget the name!) which prohibits the services of prisoners to be used in the way you mentioned.

It does seem like we are edging back to that, because lots of people have mentioned that they have seen prisoners work outside the perimeters of the prison.

I think that is a stupid thing, bored people not doing anything only get up to ****. I think we should allow these people to work and even pay them for their labour and allow them to use that money to study or further themselves. The name correctional services infers correcting peoples behaviour so they can reintegrate into society but unfortunately they usually come out worse than they went in as they learn from all the hardcore dudes.

I agree in principle.

The initial reason for the international convention was that China used their prisoners to work in sweat shops to manufacture products and paid them either nothing, or a pittance. This virtual slave labour is one of the tactics used by China to became a major player in the world economy - unfortunately at the expense of the human rights of the prisoners.

The irony of it all was that (AFAIK) China never signed that convention !

Sometimes I feel that we take the human rights of people too far. After all, if someone's in jail for rape or murder, they only proved that they don't care about the human rights of others. Why then should we as a nation respect theirs? I feel that your human rights should be dropped if you're in jail on your second murder/rape count. I'd feel more mercy for a first-time offender, especially as there's been enough cases of people wrongfully convicted. But a second offense... Nope, off to the potholes with you!

at last this b i a tch got what she deserved i only hope when she goes to the high court to challenge the sentence, they double it for her cos this b i a tch deserves to be locked up for the rest of her stinking life.

I totally agree with you on that. They dont care for human rights, when a dog bites somebody they put it down, instead our prisoners get DSTV

Her apllication for leave to appeal was turned down a while ago already.
