Johannesburg - The new Administrative Adjudication of Road Offences (AARTO) system being piloted in Pretoria may result in job losses, the Federation of Unions of SA (Fedusa) said on Wednesday.

Fedusa general secretary Dennis George said workers, especially in jobs that require a driver's licence, could lose their jobs as a result of the demerit system.

"The biggest challenge we face (as a country) is unemployment. Drivers, for instance, might face dismissal if they lose their driver's licences," said George.

AARTO is a points-based demerit system whereby a driver’s licence can be suspended when the driver runs out of points.

Points are deducted from a total of 12, depending on the offence.

The federation accused the government of not consulting relevant parties in formulating the system.

It had written a letter to the National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) to review the decision to implement the demerit system.

"We know there are problems on the road, we're looking for a more holistic approach. We don't make policy like this, the best thing is to discuss this in Nedlac," said George.

Spokesperson for the Road Traffic Management Corporation Tshino Mavhusha was yet to comment on the matter.

Erm.... not if they drive properly they won't ?

Please tell me I'm missing something really valid here somewhere !
:wtf:

drunken driving should be automatic license lost, speeding should not ;)

I watched mythbusters the otherday and they drove a drag racer at around 400km/h and the camera could not track him ... anybody know where i can get one

Then they should just drive properly and they wont loose their license.

The point system seems to be working else where, the biggest issue will be enforcing prison sentences on those who have been stripped of their licenses from driving again. If it's not plain right criminals who don't give a damn it will be the wealthy who can afford lawyers who find giant loop holes in our legal systems.

In a perfect world dude, in a perfect world........

LOL!
12 demerit points equates to 4 speeding violations in Europe (3 points per incident).. the points return 3 years after the incident. (thats the european system.. dont know what AARTO want)

In other news: Arresting bank robbers and putting them into jail prevents them from robbing banks. National union for bankrobbers is complaining that this will severly limit the work opportunities of said imprisioned bank robbers and demand that bank robbery be legalized.

This is so fckin retarded. Certain individuals break the law and now the unions are complaining that the law is the problem here.
