Yes they could have been. When you also said they should have been I interpreted it to imply that they were somehow wrong done.

ah sorry, its just that you don't expect an english team to fail in the qualifiers :D its the expectation that makes it a should

but Everton getting knocked before the tournament proper was funny :D

They were knocked out by Villareal who had been having a stellar season, making it to the semi-finals of that Champions League. They narrowly lost in the 1st leg and completely outplayed Arsenal in the 2nd Leg and were very unlucky not to make it to the final.

Everton on the otherhand would probably have been knocked out in the Group Stage had they qualified.
 
On a serious note, though...

I think the Euro club tournaments have grown to big and are causing teams problems in their home leagues. "In the old days" there were fewer Euro club games as fewer countries were involved. I honestly don't care for the Euro leagues... yes, it's big money for the clubs but I love the Premier league, La Liga and Bundesliga. As they are, without distractions.

So good luck to all the teams in the various Euro leagues... I won't be watching too many of the games.

Which is why West Ham deliberately sabotaged their Europa league chances to focus on the premier league (not that it's working at the moment). If it's not the Champions League, it's not worth it.

Even the Champions League is too long. It should be a straight KO format (like the FA Cup).

As that may be, I think the teams regularly qualifying for the CL should have the depth of squad to handle the schedules.

It creates a vicious neverending circle... big money in CL gives them the means to buy the best players. Now they go back to EPL and those same teams are too strong for the rest of the EPL. So a team like West Brom or Leceister City, etc will never ever get to CL, as they simply don''t have the funds to compete. Can they ever aspire to CL? No, simple as that.

Where do you draw the line?

Get a billionaire to buy you like City did...they were the same like West Brom and the like a few seasons ago and then got bought, bought some top players and boom! Bobs your Uncle

Edit: Avoided a Liverpool dig which was right there for the taking :D

There ain't no more billionaires wanting to spend their money right now... economy doesn't allow for it! :p

There's no way around it, it's a business now. Wait for someone to buy you and inject money into the team seems to be the competitive advantage.

Coz a couple of million is going to dent that Billions...probably make it back in interest for the year ..lol
