Hi

Now before I get blasted again for not searching the forums :D I did a search and came up with nothing, from the whole site not just gaming...

According to my very helpful ISP (webonline) im getting poor latency because I am connected to a FULL telkom exchange. (Edgemead, Cape Town)

They say my line is 100% but the exchange is congested, and is causing poor latency.

Does anyone now if its possible to switch Telkom exchanges :confused:

No, unless you move to a different area or have a very good friend working for telkom or have a couple of hundred thousand to buy your own exchange.
Usualy there are only 1 or 2 exchanges per town/subburb. I dont think they are refering to the small switch box at your telephone pole.

have you tested with an unshaped login from webafrica after 5pm?
if not i suggest you try that first.

took the plunge

Hi

I just took the plunge and bought myself 1GB prepaid unshaped from Web Africa... Will give it a try when I get home, will post results.

Question... Im on Aerie Peak, IP addres is 206.17.111.82

I cant ping this for obvious reasons, is there any way I can get a measurement from it in ms other than relying on the actual toolbar in WoW :confused:

Post some pings to google. i.e. go to command prompt and type "ping www.google.com"

Switching exchanges sounds like a very bad idea to me....the new one is going to be very far away and then you got all sorts of troubles.

Ok Im at work now, but Im amazed at the difference in lines we have here. The one below is a 512K ADSL shaped connection to IS

Pinging www.l.google.com [66.102.9.104] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.102.9.104: bytes=32 time=677ms TTL=241
Reply from 66.102.9.104: bytes=32 time=669ms TTL=241

Reply from 66.102.9.104: bytes=32 time=682ms TTL=241

Ping statistics for 66.102.9.104:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 669ms, Maximum = 682ms, Average = 676ms

Then there is our other line, which Im pretty sure is a 256K leased line, also to IS

Pinging www.l.google.com [66.102.9.99] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 66.102.9.99: bytes=32 time=273ms TTL=242

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 261ms, Maximum = 283ms, Average = 273ms

:eek:

I am also connected to the exchange in Edgemead and my ping to US servers is between 300 and 600ms every day, normally at the start of the month for the first 24 ~ 48 hours I don't play WOW cause my pings climb to incredible values of 10 000 plus
