Changes for SA matric pass mark?

The report projected that if maths was made compulsory, it would have to be phased in over a few years, to avoid a decline in overall enrollments in science-related subjects.

That is what I have been saying all along. South Africa needs to wait 150 million years to get maths to be a compulsory subject.

I am quite happy and agree with government if they reject the recommendations made.

Is maths not already a compulsory subject or are they talking about normal maths not maths literacy.

Not sure (maybe compulsory up to a certain grade), but I went to a talk by Trevor Manuel last year where he mentioned that some schools have 0 learners that opted to take math.

well yea no one wants to a hard subject. The problem is the students just don't care.

as far as I know a matriculant HAS to take either pure maths OR maths literacy in addition to English, a second language and LO as part of compulsory subjects.

Looks like they want to make pure maths compulsory because maths literacy is pretty damn useless when it comes to furthering your studies.

In which case you'd have to drop the standard to accommodate the people only capable of math literacy.

Students are no longer interested as they are following the 'leading' examples we have in government where a std 6 (or less) and a criminal record is the way to go to get R1m or two a year and not to mention all the other sideline income from a tender here and there from a family business.......

Only requirement for math would be if such a person would be interested in counting all his/her millions him/herself, other than that math have no use in this modern world.

That's a very specialised subset of maths: base 10 arithmetic. Maybe only teach that?
I would probably fail it.:D
