I have a variety of 3G routers and dongles and find that the protocol suddenly changes from 3G to Edge, the back again, change again, etc. The duration of the change could be hours or minutes. The received signal strength is constant. Experienced for all of the MNOs.
Is this a response to a very busy cell ? i.e. Suddenly call rate in the cell increases and the data usage is downgraded ? Does anyone have more information on how this works and how the operators determine when to change? Can one avoid this change ?
