Hi all, my car doesn't have those number plate brackets, there are those sponge/foam looking things behind the number plates which sticks onto the car.
Now that I need to change the number plates, I am too worried of just tearing the plates off, is there a process to remove these types of number plates? And where can I get those sponge/foam thing that the number plates stick onto?

Thanks!

They sell those double sided foam adhesive things (can't think of a name) everywhere (Mica, game etc.) They are usually sold in a little roll, with blue plastic covering... Wow that is so vague. Good luck! :D

oh ffs. its called double sided adhesive tape. and to get it off just pull hard holding whatever the tape is taped to. and you have limited time, since part of the new road traffic act requires you to rivet them on, semi-permanently.

use floss to get it off if u scared of pulling

eish, so now I have to get the number plate bracket so that I can rivet the plate on? But as far as I can tell, there are no holes to bolt on the number plate brackets, so does it mean I will have to drill the front and back bumper? Does the place that sells these brackets does the installation as well? Any idea how much the bracket costs?
Thanks!

The bracket holders will not be enforced for ages, so don't hassle, they only have to be on new cars at present, so no sweat. As with the original enforcement of seat-belts, it will take easily 10 years before all cars have to have them.

To take the old plates off, you simply pull them off, if you snap a plate it doesn't matter as you are throwing the old plates away anyway. Once you have the plate off just clean up the area and try and get as much of the double sided tape off as you can. then put the new dst on the new number plate, align it and stick it. Very simple, and a good deal more convenient than pop riveting.

are these new screwed/riveted number plate holders a national thing or only in gauteng?

No, it's National. All new cars are supplied with them. As I said earlier, it will take quite some time for it to filter through the system, and by that time the Charlies in government will have come up with some other hair brained scheme to screw the motorists.

so u reckon i can take my holders of and not really have a problem (unless i get puled over by a real douche)
they really ugly, i prefer the plate taped to the bumper

@Fazda
those temp dealer plates are valid for 21 days, how many times can they be renewed/extended?
does it cost anything to renew? if so how much do they cost?

Temp paper plates cost us R275, and they cannot be renewed. If somebody tells you that they can he is simply breaking the law.

Each temporary plate is unique to a car's VIN and Engine number, and once it is in the system, NATIS picks it up and registers that car, so you cannot issue more than one on any particular car, unless it is due to change of ownership.

As far as plates stuck on with double sided tape, it is NOT illegal, so you can tell the cop to take a hike if he stops you for it.

so the dealer is gonna organise some new paper plates
my current ones expire on the 20th, but like u say, im not sure how they gonna get new ones?

wat happens if u caught drivning with expired plates? just a fine? or more serious?
i want to register the car in CT but only goin back down in december - no way to hold it out till then?

rodga - just remember that it's not legal, so if you get caught you are on your own, no matter what the salesman says. Can you not get someone to register it for you in CT?

weird, they just called me to say their driver will be dropping it off sometime tomorow

oh well, we will see wat happens then

i can get someone to register it in CT, but would of prefered to drive down with no plates :)
