How do I unlock or change my vodafone E220 modem to MTN or unlock it to use any network? HELP!!!!

Its only the vodafone software that does'nt allow you to select use of other non vodafone providers.
Probably just download & install one of these files but which one for the 220 i'm not sure as i' have a differant modem.
At a guess i'd say the 2nd one but get someone else here to confirm

Thanx Tun@ I have downloaded the software (Mobile Partner) as you advised me from the Huawei and it works well but the problem now is that I get GPRS speed 58.86Kb on MTN and EDGE on Vodacom. I prefer MTN than Vodacom. Anything I need to do so I can increase the speed.

Skeptik is Mobile Connect similar to the Mobile Partner I have downloaded for Huawei? If not where can I get it?

Yeah try this
disconnect
then go to "tools"/"options"/Network/
and in "Network type" click on the drop down box &
change that to "WCDMA only" or "WCDMA preferred"

Does that sort it?

I have tried playing around with that but still I get the same results...just GPRS nothing more not even EDGE when using my MTN SIM. Is there anything else I can try again to sort that out?

Ok its possibly location but set it like this and see what happens
in Network select "WCDMA only"
in Band select the one that includes WCDMA2100
click APPLY - Then OK

If your not in 3G area and only got 2G available it may not connect at all with those settings but let see.

Try This... connect thru windows instead of the vodafone software...

Start

Control Panel

Network Connections

On extreme left select Create a new connection

Select Next

Select Connect to the internet Select Next

Select Setup connection manually Select next

Connect using a dial-up modem Select Next

Select the Relevant Modem (Huawei) Next

ISP Name MTN Select Next

Phone No *99# Select Next

Username Password Blank Select Next

Click Finish

Select Dial to Connect

You can then open up INTERNET EXPLORER and browse.

I tried almost everything but with MTN I just get GPRS only and nothing more and it's frustrating. Any advise?

When I change the settings according to your instructions I get no signal at all. And when I set it to "WCDMA preferred" and to "All bands" just GPRS and nothing more with MTN

That pretty much means your MTN tower only supports GPRS or Edge then

Sure I have checked with MTN coverage department and the towers support GPRS only and that frustrates big time but they told me that they are busy upgrading and they should complete that by the end of 2009.

Guess I have to hope they do that this side soon!!

Just flashed my Vodafone E220 to MTN Fastlink - works much better - can use VC, Virgin and MTN sims in it w/o problems.

I have found that using the 'external' Vodafone Mobile Connect software (either version 7xxxx or 9xxx) allows the modem to be used on any network, and even overseas without difficulty, something the 'internal' Lite software often chokes on. It also gives you the flexibility to use other modems without a major reconfiguration, e.g. a datacard or phone-as-modem, switching back and forth easily simply by choosing a different Profile (you can have up to a dozen in the version I use).

The only downside if you haven't already got the software is the download size (from the Vodacom site), of around 60 MB.

I'm told the MTN equivalent, also freely downloadable, also offers latitude in terms of switching providers or countries, but is perhaps not as functional.

I am also using an external software and it works perfectly well with any network but the downfall is that the area I am in now does not have towers that support 3G that's all the networks coz I get Edge with Vodacom and Cell C and only GPRS with my favourite network MTN. Well I have flashed my E220 with the software that I have downloaded on the Huawei site.

MTN software is open to all networks coz on my E620 I had it and it worked fine with all the networks. It is just the Vodafone on the E220 that is not open to all networks.
