Chaos at Transnet after cyber-attack

Failing to secure your systems properly does not equal a force majeure event. If I were one of their suppliers I would go to court to point that out to them. Since the riots, companies are pulling this force majeure stuff way too often.

Yeah, it's almost as if they learned a new phrase and now everyone wants to use it.

Transnet uses Cisco who punt themselves on their cybersecurity ability. Obviously being in Silicon Valley doesn't mean you ship products that are safe. But hey, blame the Russians or Chinese...

Yeah, It really shouldn't.

Such an easy target to use for extortion.

Should we have critical infrastructure open to the Internet?

Anyway, wait till we have IoT for our homes, people start using connected pacemakers, digital vision for blindness. Then we'll get to have digital/biological cross-over viruses.

Most customers will understand looting, destruction and roads closed. Most will not understand this.

Its not about understanding really...

Its whether the incident was an "unforeseen event"...and that is going to be a hard sell to the big shipping companies who are possibly losing hundreds of thousands of dollars etc...
I think if any of them decide to push the issue in a court, Transnet will be on a hiding to nothing.

“Investigators are currently determining the exact source of the cause of compromise and extent of the ICT data security breach/sabotage,” TPT said.
It sounds like they haven't got a clue as to "the exact source of the cause" or any other mumbo jumbo in that sentence.

I think I can save Transnet some time and money in that investigation:

Cause of the compromise is Cadre Deployment.
Exact source is wilful negligence and incompetence resulting from Cadre Deployment.
Extent is catastrophic failure.

Maybe it's too soon for Corrective Action but here it is: Redeploy the Cadres to the inside of a container, seal that container and ship it to Cuba.

Using email to tell their employees to not access email... sets the tone for the whole cluster****...

Do they still have any infrastructure and systems worth protecting anyway?

yes, they'll also send them another email when its safe for them to use their email again
