Bring back corporal punishment I say. I remember when it was stopped, was in std 6 and teachers soon became a joke, no one would listen and detention just didn't do the trick.
OT:
Don't know if it was like this at other schools but I remember when everyone below std 8 feared/respected the matrics because if you disrespected them they could "set you straight" and most of the time everyone would turn a blind eye because you had it coming. When I was in matric even the std 6's could swear at us and just generally disrespect us and we couldn't do anything. And as soon as they realise they can get away with it they become more brazen.

I'd support taking such teachers into the street and stoning them. Just to within an inch of their lives mind you. Well maybe I'd go as far as 2cm.

The reason I wasn't a trouble maker in school was because I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I knew for sure that I didn't wanna be a bum on the street giving hand jobs for crack ^_^ Common sense really
My kid would know how to seriously hurt any older scumbag that tried that nonsense. All kinds of unfortunate accidents can befall a Matric bully.
Maybe pathetic losers who cannot control a class without hitting someone shouldn't be teachers in the first place. That's really what happened. These losers who didn't know how to command respect were suddenly left high and dry.
The law was quite clear on the limits imposed on corporal punishment and within those limits it would not actually be particularly effective. Of course many teachers actually broke the law regularly and should have been punished for it. Maybe what they needed was a good beating.

That "law" was supposedly in force in my time at school as well. Hardly any of the teachers followed it.
Great examples they set.... They can break a national law because you did something that their hung-over heads didn't like on a Monday morning....
My cousin nearly required reconstructive surgery to his arse after a teacher caught him insitgating a game of open gates at school. It was ridiculous! Unfortunately corporal punishment would not work today as most teachers would be **** scared to hit a pupil for fear of retaliation outside of school.
If I caught a teacher smacking my child I would be up for murder - they have no right to touch another individual, especially my child and corporal punishment is open to far too much abuse.
Discipline starts and ends at home. The school can try all they like to instil good values into a kid, unfortunately if the kid doesnt have the same support at home, it will never work.
I agree though that teachers are probably not taught how to effectively control their classes these days - pure speculation though based on constant disruptions in learning facilities. Kids are not taught discipline at home which only fuels the fire.
Something should be done, as it is our tax money that schools them and replaces the trains and facilities they damage when they are a little unhappy. 9/10 their unhappiness is based on unrealistic expectations though which are obviously not clearly expressed to them.

It's not that. They don't get ANY discipline at home anymore. So now the schools and teachers need to do that as well. It's a School for crying out loud, they're suppose to Teach children stuff and give them a proper education, not play Parent Parent the whole day. These days there are disciplinary hearing after disciplinary hearing in schools and the teachers have to put out fires left right and center after each break time because Jannie and Pietie got to each other!
You need to see my mom's Grade 4&5 class ... Some of those 'things' in that class do not have Any respect for Anything other than Himself (Mind you, this year's class seems to be a bit better than last year). It's getting worse and worse each year. Who do I blame? The parents.
Just for interest sake though ... how would you control this 'mob' mentality of these 'children'? How do you Stop a group of hooligans that just stoned four cars? "Hey guys, come on now - be nice, leave the cars alone. You can even bring those nice little stones with you. Yea, we can use them in our calculus class today – I guess ... Please? " Nope. Corporal punishment also is not the way to go though.

I agree to an extent. Back at school most of us got up to no good. I remember deflating a certain teachers' tyres at least once a week for close on 3 months before we were caught. However there were certain teachers who I respected and would never have even considered doing this to.
Seems only the severity of the insolence has changed. If teachers knew how to gain the respect of their pupils, they would be less prone to this type of behaviour. I am not blaming the teachers though, I just doubt they earn the respect that teachers of yesteryear did.

A lot of you seems to stand on your civil rights. There use to be an old saying: "Here lies Piet Retief. He demanded his rights."
Most of the times these civil rights demanders are the geeks. Sitting in class scoring like hell and participate in nothing else. Not sport, fun, good or bad.
Talking about losers not controlling a class. You have most probably seen nothing yet.
The good 'ol military days you could be as big and bad ass-ed you wanted to be. Believe me rather sooner than later you would do exactly what a 18 year old corporal told you to do. In a wink of an eye.
There was only one reason for that. Discipline. That was not instilled by kissing you back side. You unconditionally did what he said or you or even worse your buddies came badly second. You didn't want your buddies to come second. They didn't exactly approve of that. Further nobody even told them of civil rights. They donnered you and that solved most of the problems.
I would have loved to meet your civil rights breekers those days.
PS: I never was a corporal.
