Got my statement and I have been charged for BIS on my iPhone contract.
I upgraded to iPhone in January already.

Called in and apparently I have to manually cancel BIS by calling Vodacom.
How can this be? Doesn't sound right...if I upgraded to iPhone, what use would BIS be?

Not happy...

One of two things... either your previous contract was a Blackberry contract or it was a normal contract with a BB blot on.

If you moved from the BB contract to an normal contract then they would have only canceled the BIS at the end of your contract period, there is a chance that you upgraded before the end of your contract, usually you wouldn't even know but when you change contracts this happens.

OR

You have a BB bolt on and that has to be cancelled manually, like an sms bundle or a data bundle that is independent of your contract. When doing your upgrade they wont know about this unless you specifically tell them

They always do this.

Myself, my brother and my mom each had a BB with an upgrade due shortly. We each upgraded to something other than a BB and each specifically told them to cancel BIS when we collected our new phones. In each case, BIS continues until you phone a second time (usually a month or two later ...)
