I was flabbergasted when Playground in Cresta charged me R50 for cutting my full-size SIM down to a micro SIM. Is this standard procedure? I honestly thought the salesguy was pulling my leg, but then they insisted I pay R50.

Haha I can imagine this scene.

Sales Guys: All done sir, here is your sim, that will be R50
You: Haha thanks man
Sales Guy: That'll be R50 sir
You: Haha can you imagine if that's what it cost *derp*
Sales Guy: No really its R50
You: WTF

Haha... well, if it had gone down like that I would have been even less impressed since I'm female ;-)

They did tell me *before* doing it that it would cost R50, but I honestly thought the guy was pulling my leg. Of course I had to pay, since he did actually inform me of the cost before doing it. Interestingly, another customer came in immediately after me, also for a Sim cut, and paid the money, no complaint.

Did you receive an invoice? If so, scan and post it here.

Done (I hope).

I don't buy from them anymore, nor from the small shop next to pick 'n pay in randpark.

They always hover around as if they're expecting me to steal something.

Do you work for free?

Not a bad price. Time. Skill. Equipment. None of these are free.

Not a good price considering you can do it at home by printing out a template and cutting your sim with a pair of scissors in under 2 minutes.

Then he should have done that.

You can change your car's oil and plugs for R0.00 labour if you do it yourself. But don't expect a garage to do it for that price. Or complain when they charge you.

Was it a proper SIM press thing or scissors?

OK, granted they should get paid for their time and the use of their equipment. But R50? Let's be generous and say it took 5 minutes. That's a rate of R600 per hour! I think if you're going to charge that, you should at least have gone to university for several years and have pretty specialised skills!

I've had several different jewellery stores fit a new watchstrap for me for free, when I brought in a new strap bought elsewhere. I've had an optometrist re-attach the arm onto a cheap old pair of sunglasses for me for free.

And haven't they heard of goodwill? I'd be much more inclined to buy something from them if they did this for me for free. Now I won't consider stepping into the store ever again.

This is apparently a loophole that the service branches of our cellular providers are just exploiting wherever they can. I feel that service providers should just try to standardize whether people should still pay money when all they can do is to cut it into a smaller shape from normal sim to micro-sim or nano-sim. Maybe MyBB can do an article on this sometime?
