Charges loom after Vodacom 'lies'

The competition commission may lay criminal charges against Vodacom representatives who lied to the regulator about the rational for the proposed takeover of Global Telematics South Africa (GTSA), as well as previous transactions that were approved by the commission.

I really hope charges are laid against representatives who bluntly lie to the Competition Commission or any other regulator for that matter. This will significantly improve the regulatory debates at these hearings and save a great deal of time!

I hope so too, but it’s doubtful as big business in SA is not subject to the same rules as ordinary folk... The SA consumer always seems to receive the short end of the stick.

These are very serious allegations - especially considering that they come from the Competition Tribunal which together with the Competition Commission have unquestionable integrity and an extremely important legislated mandate to ensure a fair and level playing field.

What surprises me though, is that the CC & CT have to my knowledge never issued similar condemnations about Telkodemonopolies and its representatives - if individuals within Vodacom end up with criminal charges [presumably perjury] being laid against them by the CC, then I want to see the same being applied to individuals within Telkodemonopolies for their blatant lies and deception.

Considering that the ISPA's complaints against Telkodemonopolies for anti-competitive practices, are receiving more Competition Commission attention, and that a ruling is due by the end of June [2008], I have to wonder if the CT & CC are silently sending Telkodemonopolies a message that any individuals within Telkodemonopolies that are caught committing perjury, will be rewarded with criminal charges...

And they do nothing, but suck on it, and complain about the taste.
