My friends and I feel like chatting through the command prompt. Is this possible? If so how is it done?

goto command prompt
(make sure messenger is on) - check mmc - services - start messenger (on both pc's)
then type in prompt "Net send *IP* #message"

Yup....but i think it is disabled by default in windows XP.
So you might have to goto the properties and set the startup to manual or automatic before it allows you to start the service.
Once you have set it to manual or automatic startup....you can use the services to stop and start it...or command line also.
At command prompt...you can type in "net start messenger" or "net stop messenger" to start and stop the messenger service respectively
