ChatGPT

I feel sorry for anyone who's a junior writer trying to get into the space. These are the tasks they would normally have to do while they worked their way up and actually became half decent writers. Now a bot will do it for R800 bucks a month :/

At least my company says my job is safe. They've been experimenting with it and while it's fine for basic content it's too robotic in tone for the content I produce.

It has its place and quality content writers will be okay.

Same way it can produce code but devs won’t be out of jobs.

how it can be used for naming the products, writing marketing material, etc, and their reply was that they'll be having a meeting with their marketing team as it's doing a better job than the team

I will admit that ChatGPT is great for short form content (like product descriptions and the like), but depending on the type of stuff they're producing, it should still be a bit worse than a professional writer.

99.999% of what they (and I) do is short - 50 words per point or less. Nobody wants to read 150+ words about 2.0 USB-powered multimedia speakers, and even on bigger things that I sell (eg, TVs) nobody wants to read more than a few lines per feature. Eg (and I'm going completely off the top of my head here):

65" Offers the Perfect Balance for the Living Room
OLED for the Deepest Blacks
120Hz Offers Smoother Motion
0.1ms Response Times Reduce Ghosting
4 HDMI Inputs for Media Players, Consoles and More
etc

In fact, I wanna put this to the test. I've never written any of the above myself (that's the vendors' job, LOL), let's see what ChatGPT comes up with.

------------

Write blurbs for each of the following points for a TV, explaining why each is a selling point. Note that the VESA mounting is 400x300mm. Expand on each point and aim for 50-100 words per point:

65" Offers the Perfect Balance for the Living Room
OLED for the Deepest Blacks
120Hz Offers Smoother Motion
0.1ms Response Times Reduce Ghosting
4 HDMI Inputs for Media Players, Consoles and More
VESA Wall Mounting Eliminates the Stand
Built-In NetFlix, Apple TV and More for Streaming
High Quality Dolby Atoms Sound
4K HDR Support to Make Your Content Pop

------------

65" Offers the Perfect Balance for the Living Room

A 65-inch TV is the ideal size for most living rooms, providing an immersive viewing experience without taking up too much space. Whether you're watching movies, playing video games, or streaming your favorite shows, a 65-inch TV is sure to deliver a picture that you'll love.

OLED for the Deepest Blacks

OLED technology provides an amazing viewing experience, with inky blacks, vibrant colors, and an unmatched contrast ratio. With self-lit pixels that can turn on and off individually, OLED TVs deliver a level of contrast and color accuracy that's unmatched by other TV technologies. Whether you're watching in a dark room or a bright one, OLED TVs will always deliver an incredible picture.

120Hz Offers Smoother Motion

If you're a fan of fast-paced action and sports, a 120Hz refresh rate is essential. This higher refresh rate eliminates motion blur, making everything from car chases to sports games look smoother and more lifelike. With a higher refresh rate, you'll be able to follow the action with ease, without any distracting blurs or lag.

0.1ms Response Times Reduce Ghosting

A TV's response time is crucial for gaming and fast-paced action. A low response time ensures that images change quickly and smoothly, without any ghosting or blurring. With a response time of 0.1ms, this TV delivers a gaming experience that's second to none, with fast, responsive action that keeps up with even the most demanding games.

4 HDMI Inputs for Media Players, Consoles and More

With 4 HDMI inputs, this TV is ready to connect all your devices, from media players to gaming consoles to cable boxes. This gives you the freedom to switch between devices easily, without having to constantly unplug and replug cords. Whether you're streaming movies, playing video games, or watching TV, this TV has you covered.

VESA Wall Mounting Eliminates the Stand

Eliminate the need for a bulky TV stand with the VESA wall mount compatibility. The 400mm x 300mm mount size allows for a sleek and tidy setup that saves space in your living room. Enjoy a clean and modern look with this versatile wall mounting option.

Built-In NetFlix, Apple TV and More for Streaming

This TV comes with popular streaming services built-in, including Netflix, Apple TV, and more. Enjoy a world of entertainment with no need for extra devices. Simply connect to the internet and start streaming your favorite content with ease.

High Quality Dolby Atoms Sound

The TV is equipped with Dolby Atoms sound technology, providing high-quality audio for an immersive viewing experience. The technology offers rich and powerful sound that takes your TV viewing to the next level.

4K HDR Support to Make Your Content Pop

This TV supports 4K HDR, providing stunning picture quality with enhanced contrast, brightness and vivid colors. Watch your favorite content in a way that truly pops, bringing a cinematic experience to your home. Whether you're watching movies or sports, you'll enjoy stunning visuals that bring your content to life.

This is plenty of info and, for the most part, actually rather accurate. About 500 words in total and quite nicely written.

I disagree. No high-quality writer is born that way, and they have to work their way up. ChatGPT can be a great training tool. "I wrote this, analyse and explain where it could be better." Writers also have their own unique writing cadence and style, and you end up enjoying some more than others.

People I email frequently can tell whether I wrote the email, regardless of the email address and signature, as I have a certain style. I can sometimes tell by replies from frequent respondents what sort of day they're having.

However far AI gets, I have my doubts it'll be able to introduce the same level of personality into writing.

Many high-quality commercial writers worked their way up by starting with grunt work that ChatGPT can now do. Product descriptions. Website meta data. "Low quality" online content. What are they going to "cut their teeth on" if a bot is writing work that people in their situation would normally do?

Look. This is coming from a guy who did grunt work technical writing and kept a free blog going for close on 10 years before getting an opportunity in marketing and getting a decent pay cheque. If ChatGPT existed when I was working my way up, I wouldn't have gotten my first big step up work/pay wise to get to the point where I am now.

At the end of the day, I think many upcoming junior writers who are still developing their own style will likely be culled or simply won't be given the chance because it's cheaper to have a bot do their work.

For more context, I'm learning basic coding (mostly for my own interest) and likely to pivot into UX writing (devouring design books to help with this) this year simply because I won't have to do the majority of the work I do now in 5+ years. By that time, ChatGPT or whatever else exists will put the foundation in for the content I work on and then I'll be there to make it human.

I scrambled "sustainable" and then asked chat gpt to unscramble it. Doesn't work as expected.

q: unscramble the word essutblania

a: The word unscrambled is "Australia".

q: unscramble the letters essutblania into a word

a: The word unscrambled from the letters "essutblania" is "Australia".

q: unscramble the letters essutblania into a word using all of the letters

a: The word formed using all the letters "essutblania" is "Australia".

q: use all of the letters in a word

a: The word formed using all the letters "essutblania" is "Australia".

q: make a single word out of all of the following letters "essutblania"

a: The word formed using all the letters "essutblania" is "Australia".

Maybe I'm not very clear with regards to what I want it to do...

I tried different formulations. Its still not getting it.

Yeah, like I said before, it never gets things quite right on the first try. It even gave me sustenance again after I explained to it that there's no L in that word.

Kind of sucks that one can't use a "language" model AI to make anagrams. I tried it before and gave up.

OpenAI has announced ChatGPT Plus, a $20 monthly plan that gives you priority access to the AI chatbot, even during peak time where free users would have to wait. The company also says the plan will give you “faster response times” and “priority access to new features and improvements.”

OpenAI says it’ll be sending out invitations for the service to people who are in the US and on its waitlist “over the coming weeks” and that it’ll be expanding the rollout to other countries and regions in the future.

I had tons of similar interactions, trying it to do certain basic tasks just ends up to the equivalent of you arguing with a stupid person which checks out because according to research ChatGPT has the functional intelligence of somebody with an 85 IQ

I have spoken to ChatGPT at length. There is nothing spooky about it. Its database is from 2021, was written in Python and is in its third iteration.

Can confirm it knows all programming languages, but it can only code up to an extent. It, itself, confirm it is a tool for programmers but cannot replace programmers.

It can do basic problem-solving, but once it gets plugged into a true verified information it will be valuable. Like Google was when it started out.

I find that it falls over itself badly with simple things - logic is something it can't handle (my mom was in city X and my dad was in city Y when I was born, where was I born?). When it comes to more advanced things that someone with an IQ of 85 wouldn't even understand it begins to show what it's worth and can often answer faster than I can and with reasonable to high accuracy. When it comes to creativity it really shines:

Write a +/-100 word blurb about our purest, freshest ice. The target market is Eskimos

Whether you're an Inuit hunter, a Yupik fisherman, or just looking for the finest quality ice, look no further. Trust us to provide you with the freshest and purest ice, every time."

Sell crutches to an Olympic sprinter

"Attention Olympic Sprinters, are you looking for a reliable solution for your temporary mobility needs? Look no further than our top-of-the-line crutches. Our crutches are engineered with the athlete in mind, offering maximum support and stability for quick and safe recovery. Made from durable and lightweight materials, our crutches are easy to maneuver, allowing you to maintain your active lifestyle. With adjustable height and cushioned hand grips, you can customize your crutches for optimal comfort and support. So if you want to stay in the game, invest in our crutches and get back to your winning ways in no time."

For the last two weeks, rather than having it do all my work for me, I've made use of it to streamline my processes and do a fair amount of things I can't do (eg VBA, and even writing a few plugins for my site which have thus far done perfectly fine in an offline environment).

I think it will have a side effect of reducing the need for more developers as the developers who use ChatGPT to augment their capabilities will be more efficient at what they do, hence businesses will need less staff to output the same amount of work (if not more and to a higher quality).

I think. We'll transition to more operator-oriented roles, feeding commands to these types of systems that spit out solutions, we'll copy and paste, modify as needed. With Dall-E, there could be an integration between the 2 models where one could say, "I have problem X, it needs to be built like Y, present an architectural diagram of what this system would look like and a roadmap, indicating how long this would take with a cross-functional team of <insert roles and experience levels>", sort of thing, and it would just spit all of this out in seconds.

I feel for places like Stackoverflow though.. GPT is far more efficient now, with its conversational and contextual abilities. They'll probably have to adapt or fall into irrelevance. :(

It will not happen, remember GPT is the cool kid on the block. Soon they will want to charge for their services and then its popularity will decrease significantly.

But I am looking into building my own "offline" version. Then I can plug other resources into it and see how that goes. Again, GPT is the future, but it will be a paid for service soon. Of that I am sure.

There are far more advanced systems in the works right now that aren't very public at the moment (so I hear). GPT has the spotlight for now, and their API's are already subscription based IIRC. They'll continue to evolve their pricing model over time to suit the business needs, but this won't stop businesses, considering the potential to greatly improve its employee's capabilities (and with that, driving up revenue) and fill in some gaps.

In the coming months to years, we'll see major improvements in GPT (GPT4 that is) and other players enter the arena (with possibly (maybe very likely!) even better systems). Support roles will be greatly affected (whether or not it would be eliminated is another story), dev roles would be affected, artists are already affected with Dall-E and other creative arts AI models (soon web designers and UX would be affected). Project managers, finance roles etc. All of it.

Again, whether or not it will eliminate the roles are up in the air, but they would be greatly affected. Time will tell. But no reason not to continue in this space. One must just be ready to adapt. :)
