Hi all,

I just moved into a flat with my brother and now we're looking for cheap ADSL options that would allow us to do browsing, as well as DotA & Black Ops, and not forced to sign a 12- or 24-month contract.

So far it seems like I have to pay the silly Telephone line rental of R131 and then like a bundled ADSL package. eg.
a) WebAfrica Home Complete Smart 1GB (384kbps) - R99.00 Monthly (for the first 3 months - R169.00 monthly thereafter)
b) WebAfrica Home Complete Smart 10GB (up to 10Mbps) - R399.00 Monthly (for the first 3 months - R599.00 monthly thereafter)

I'll then topup the option (a) with like 10GB OpenWeb IS Local only for R70 and Axxess Lite which is like R19/GB.

I'm definitely going to buy my own hardware, which would most likely include:
D-Link DSL-2500U as ADSL modem and TP-Link WR1043ND with DD-WRT firmware as WiFi AP & Switch.

4Mpbs can also be an option if its not much more than 384kbps, because I really hate the slow 384kbps :)

I still have to test Cell C's 3G/HSDPA, but I would really like to play FPS online :(

I'm already getting all my series at my office, and I rarely browse international sites, except for the few review sites every now and then.

Ideas/suggestions are much appreciated.

not sure how hardcore you going blackops, but if you want the lowest ping, you need mweb account, as hosted by them.

peering though cinx will make your ping a bit higher.

dota just about any account will do, but cheapest look like r19 a gig account, or the local account.

at R600 you just get 384 line and openweb gold or 512 and openweb gold, as you probably want to play together and then 128kps upload wont be enough for it.

Thanks hereticangel.

My parents have 384kbps Mweb and my ping isn't that great on it either, so I guess that using Web Africa won't make such a big difference in any case. I'm just playing the game for the fun, but having better latencies is always an advantage :)

I don't quite see a point in 512kbps accounts or uncapped ADSL at this moment, since 384kbps is enough for 2x CoD4/Black Ops games and I can download big stuff at my work.

mmm yeah my ping is about 40-50, though i live a 1km away from data centre in parow, could be helping the ping.

i know allot of people cant even play it on 384 because of live update stats, etc.

though looking at my bandwidth monitor it should play fine on 384, if you don't skype etc. ( i use voip to play with friends etc, so then it goes over 128kps)

Thanks.

I have to say that I did experience connectivity issues quite a few times with my 384kbps line though, when my friend on his 4Mbps Mweb uncapped had no issues whatsoever.

Anyone here know how well Cybersmart accounts work with Black Ops and if you can get it on a month-month basis?

oooh cybersmart is bad, just read there terms and conditions, there is thread here somewhere.

il go for 4mb from telkom and maybe 10gb from afrihost

yep, afrihost capped always runs max speed etc, so when that steam updates roll in, they will go fast :)
