Cheap broadband more likely

Steven White, Telkom’s executive for product development, says the proposed removal of the monthly fee is “not doable. That’s the bottom line.”
Not doable?? I would think that with the profits you okes make (+-R6 billion) a lot should be DOABLE.
White said it would like the opportunity to sit down with Icasa and explain what the cost recoverables etc are. He says its current findings are “fundamentally flawed.”
erm, you have had ample opportunity to spew your so called explanations, like the capping issue. Feel free to have another go although you might want to brush up on 'half truths 101' first.
White said Icasa would battle to justify increasing the cap for Telkom, as its offering was “very competitive” with others in the market. Wireless Business Solutions’ (WBS) iBurst also has a 3GB cap, while both Vodacom and MTN cap their packaged 3G offerings at 1GB.
Newsflash Stevie, they are next.
As Telkom’s executive for product development it might be a good idea to start thinking 'outside the blue and green box' that is Telkom for a change and also start to realise that in a true competitive market your existing profits are not sustainable. Get used to it. The cracks are starting to show and its adapt or die time. The choice is yours.

Steve White says the 3GB cap is very competitive with others in the market. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but Telkom's cap is "inline with international trends"? Now he's saying it's inline with other South African competitors....

I like the justification with mobile services which is inferrior to fixed line service. Also my wireless is the only one of those mentioned that people use as they would with a fixed line service.

btw mobile services seem inferrior by a loong way, and more expensive for less capacity except mywireless, why is this ? Mobility is a big advantage yes, but at that price.. keeping in mind your latency etc is worse off.

How many times is this gonna be forced into talks.. i read this article and was half conviced i read it already due to the same stuff being said. so it started in feb 2004.. is there an end and finalisation of the regulation going to occur nxt yr ? or is it doomed for another yr. obviously they going to object again.. surely after objecting everytime icasa can say enough is enough, take it and implement.

The abolition of the line rental will go a LONG way towards CHEAP, I think. It's what weve been campaigning for. However, I suspect that if the line-rental is dropped, the per-Gig rate charged on bandwidth will increase porportionally so we will just end up in the same place...

Juice

The biggest problem is that Telkom has a massive legal department - paid for by us having no choice but to pay the massive Telkom bills.

Many of these lawyers do nothing else but confuse the issues eg. to let ICASA believe that BT provides ADSL to the UK at a substantial loss. (Hypothetical example!!!!)

Alacos is for all practical puposes a one man band taking on an empire in Telkom towers. Why do you think the press in general is so quite? The existance of that massive legal department is enough to let editors say "rather not..."

If it's not doable - then you have done something wrong, as even countries such as Mauritius and Mongolia have cheaper (much cheaper) ADSL.

Education is precious - get some.

Telkom said recently that they have 100,000 ADSL subscribers. If the average line rented is the 512 option then the rental they recieve from the lines is R477 x 100,000 = R47,700,000. Seeing as they had a profit of R6.8B last I saw the line rental from DSL only equates to 0.7% of that.

Not doable. BULL! Dropping profits by this low amount will hardly even make a dent in their bottom line. Or am I missing something.

Anyway just my 2c worth.

I still reckon that it is eminently doable as the increased broadband uptake will more than cover the loss of line rentals provided that bandwidth costs can be kept in line with international costing structures.

That would be per month X 12 for doing buggerall, lekker business this hey.
Their traditional business areas are rapidly shrinking in volume and profit (voice, diginet), hence why they are making up some thumbsuck monthly fee (apparently only in SA) to maintain their profits.
Nothing more than robbery.

You see, they are too retarded to understand that. Even my 8 year old sister understands this kind of thinking. You charge less. More people buy. Makes YOU more money.

To Help Telkom Understand: If three children give you 5 sweets each you have 15 sweets. If 20 children give you 2 sweets each you have 40 sweets. 40 is a bigger number than 15, so you'd have more sweets. See? Understand?

The utter garbage that splurges out of the Telkom mouthpiece is laughable. It's actually offensive to me as a consumer that they think I'm so stupid.
I really hope ICASA isn't bullied into more "discussions" by Telkom. Screw Telkom and whether or not they think it's "doable"!

When is Carte` Blanche going to do an expose on this? Why hasn't it been done already? Because M-Net is in Telkom's pocket! Just look at this season of Idols.
By the way Nicky should've won, she was by far the best.

... Telkom wants the 20 kids to give them 5 sweets each - 100 sweets. Thats their logic.

well as long as enough children have sweets to give away..

Er, Steve, if it's not doable by you and your management, you and you management can be replaced by someone who can do.

Seconded, bekdik! Now, since we have a valid proposal on the floor, can the chairperson please put this "vote of no confidence in the board as a whole" to a general vote? Thank you!

/me thinks teklom's board just got fired by shareholders! :D
/me hopes 'tis not a nightmare, but a vision of the future!

According to Telkom's top management they want to promot ADSL .According to the major shareholder ( the government) they want to promot ADSL . The guy how is responsible for ADSL in Telkom want to keep ADSL back . So what he is doing there ?
