Anyone know of a cheap router that is capable of doing VPN. I'm using unotelly and want all my traffic to pass via the router with Vpn setup. I currently have a billion Vdsl router, but will connect the other router to existing one.

Or is there a better and easier way via a Windows pic perhaps.

Hey - I got a spare one I picked up for $15. Its yours, if you want - but i am in Pretoria. Its got a US power connector tho

Off topic question
Why vpn for unotelly?

Good question, well let's just say I'm trying things out

Why not just VPN from another machine on your network and see how it works?

If you are happy with the performance or whatever you are trying out then get a dedicated VPN device..

I will that thanks. Will see what type of performance I get

Hi Kopite,

I recently assisted my cousin with the same requirements you appear to have. Buy a simple RB750, which is a mikrotik device and use that.

It works well.

Indeed
You can also configure it, for example, to pass local traffic directly out instead of via the vpn.

Your performance would be way worse as you've now introduced significant overhead!

So if before, you were getting 4Mbps to the Netflix CDN directly, now I'd guess you'd probably only get 2.5Mbps over VPN...

The TP-Link WR841ND V10 is dirt cheap and can be flashed with OpenWRT or DDWRT.
I've installed DDWRT on mine with privateinternetaccess.com VPN. On a 8mbps capped line netflix stream without issues.

DDWRT Open VPN setup doesn't work on this router so i had to setup PPTP.
I have not checked out if openvpn works on OpenWRT.

Just a word of warning. Before you start custom flashing make sure you have a soldering iron and a Nokia DKU-5 cable.
The tools you need if you brick the router. I've managed to brick mine several times while playing with it but it's easily unbricked with little to no skills.

If you interested pm me and i'll give you the links to the correct firmware.

Ok, so I bought the Mikrotik RB751U-2HnD

Can anyone help me update the firmware and setup the router for all my traffic to pass via the Vpn connection.

I'm a person with little to no patience. My Vdsl router is a billion 8800nxl with ip range 192.168.x.x
The Mikrotik is 192.168.88.x

Anyone in Cpt or via pm is cool too.

This the part where you'll find the advice on the board a bit lacking which is understandable as Mikrotik is not the easiest to configure.

You'll have to pay someone a callout or google it and follow a guide.

So I played around with it. Connected the mikrotik to vdsl modem on port 2 and 1st port to laptop. First port is a poe port which seems to be the gateway port. Setup a bridge and got Internet connection via mikrotik router.

Now the big is do I setup the mikrotik as the link to Internet or keep vdsl modem as the Internet connection. Then is to setup the vpn connection for all traffic to flow through.

MY standard way is as follow:

1. Put Modem in Bridge mode
2. Plug modem into port 1 of Mikrotik
3. Dial out PPPOE account
4. Set up NAT
5. Set up routing rule for MODEM IP
6. Profit
