Hi guys. I came across this service today and it looks really neat. The product is called Rebtel. What it is is a VOIP solution for calling international for like really cheap. Cheap cheap. To call an international number from South Africa to the United States is in the region of 12 cents for landline and mobile/cell phone. That's S.A. currency, not U.S. To call the United Kingdom it is slightly more expensive. Around 15.2 cents for landline and R 1.44 for mobile/cell phone.

It even gets better than this. Some countries ( South Africa included ) are regarded as Rebtel countries. This allows Rebtel users to call internationally for free in these countries. I signed up for the service and allocated my home number in South Africa to the system. Rebtel then allocates a local phone number here which reflects on the phone number back in South Africa. So when I call this local number for free, the phone in South Africa will ring, my folks just answer it and then call me back on the local number which Rebtel gave them when they signed up.

It works like this.

1. Call your friend on their Rebtel number. (a local South African phone number)

2) Ask your friend to call you back. Tell them to use the number which you gave them or which is shown on their phone screen.

3) Stay on the line. Don't hang up! In a few seconds your friend will join you back on the call.

Please note: You and your friend will pay your phone companies for the local part of the call. The international connection is free!

Rebtel does have a website. If interested click on the banner under the business opportunity page on my website to go to their website.

Up to now I haven't used the service so I am not sure on voice quality and other VOIP issues. I am pretty sure it will be along the lines of Skype and Google Talk. By the way, you also get 10 minutes free talk time on sign up to try out the service.

Also no downloads are required for your computer and you don't really need a computer at all. You could set the entire thing up from your cell phone through sms or at your local internet cafe'. Details are on the website.

Rebtel seems awesome. personally I use Voipraider. I call South African landlines for free anytime of day (4 hours free a week) and call SA cellphones at around R1.00 a min. I thought that VR was pretty cheap too.
