Looking for a cheap SSD for my server. So far I've found a Corsair 60GB LS Series for R594. What do you guys think? Is it any good.

I have a Corsair GTX and I am very happy with it. I did quite a lot of research and almost went with the LS, so that's probably one of the better ones that you can get for that price.

I'll never recommend a 60GB SSD to anyone. 15% of the drive should always be available if you don't want to run into problems. That doesn't leave you much to work with.

I personally like the Corsair SSD's. I have a 1st generation P256 that cost me R10K. Never had a day of issues.

Including OS patches/updates? It NEVER stays the same. Size issues will arise. Even if it isn't connected to the web, patches/updates is the bottom floor of protecting yourself. Never mind this bit of software, that bit of AV. It's short term to get a 60 GB SSD. Now matter how you look at it.

A media server OS uses less than 10GB of storage, and that's with additional services and functions also installed. I had a copy of xbmc installed on a 8GB flash drive and didn't have issues at all, for the 2 odd years I used that setup.
No way anything more than a 60GB drive is needed here.

Was it connected to the internet and was it up to date?

I suppose it depends on how you use it but I'm interested how you used it?

Yes, it was connected to the Internet and it was up to date.
I used it as a Web server, ftp/file server, proxy, firewall, DHCP server and download box.

You realize that there are other OSs than Windows right? You also realize that if one were so inclined, one could have a fully functional OS installed, that takes up only a few hundred MB?

+1 on the 8gb flash, also been using it as my main media system for quite some time now.

I would even say that 60gb could even be considered overkill.... If you are going to use openelec

Sorry guys, I've forgotten to mention I'm running Linux Mint on it. Average space used by OS is 8gb and also other apps which include XP VM on Virtualbox. All other storage is on my WD Reds.

A quick check of one of my smaller HP Microserver Plex boxes shows I use about 14G of OS drive.
I'll bet thats mostly Plex use too..

60G should be plenty fine if its just OS use.

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 1.8T 14G 1.7T 1% /
none 4.0K 0 4.0K 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
udev 1.9G 4.0K 1.9G 1% /dev
tmpfs 383M 580K 383M 1% /run
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 1.9G 4.0K 1.9G 1% /run/shm
none 100M 0 100M 0% /run/user
nas 2.2T 128K 2.2T 1% /nas
nas/storage 11T 8.3T 2.2T 80% /nas/storage

Important storage should be kept on raid like media, with offsite backups where necessary.
/nas is zfs raidz1 in the above (4 x 4tbs, or 4 x "3.7TB"'s in lets not screw with the units sizing)

60gb is way more than enough for os drive. I've got windows 8.1 update 1 with all updates installed. And sickbeard etc. On a 60gb ssd and I'm not even using half of it. Everything else is on normall hdd's.

Nice price for a 128 GB but it has crappy write speed.

For a media server (or any normal home pc for that matter) you will not notice much (if any) difference between the fastest and slowest SSD, will still be way faster than any normal hdd.

Best to order the takealot daily deals asap, as they sometimes get sold fairly quick. Although at this time of the year I'm not sure if that will be the case.
