Cheaper DStv HD PVR: How does it compare?

Voice sync over HDMI
EPG issues
DMX channels on HD
etc.

I count 1 - Voice sync....... the other 2 are features that have not been rolled out. You can't call a missing feature a "major issue" or even an "issue" for that matter. When you buy a BABY-PVR you know that it doesn't have this - but may be rolled out in future.

If they said it had it when you buy it and you plug it in and it doesn't - then by all means - label that an issue.

Whats missing from the article is series recording...
SDPVR - no
HDPVR 4 tuner - yes
HDPVR 2 tuner - not yet
And how long was the HDPVR 4 tuner around before it could do series recording, years? If the 2 tuner takes as long you may as well forget it.

I reckon these units *could* be fantastic all-in-one networked media centers that could do away with your media players, usb dvd players etc., if only DSTV would enable the ethernet and usb ports! Instead we get crippled hardware and have to pay extra for limited functionality.

From the UEC brochure for the HD-PVR 2U:
... offers additional capacity through external hard-disk drive support. A full
interconnectivity suite supports various home-theatre options and network devices.
That is with the factory software. Once those assh.les at MC get hold of it, it turns to sh.t.

They haven't rolled out the TV Guide yet?? Since when, used to work on my dual view, or what exactly does EPG mean to you?

Where does it say DMX doesn't work, Multichoice just responded on hellopeter that it does work on HD.

So I'm still on THREE major issues.

According to their product page page, it says it includes 40+ audio channels, so to me, is an issue.

The DMX music channels do work. DMX DJ (shows track info) doesn't.

I am not going to get ino a flaming match. I just feel that you are being a little unfair on the product by labelling these things major issues. But if that is your opinion then ok. I can live with that. I can also live with a great piece of kit in my lounge.

DMX doesn't work at all on my UEC decoder, all I get is a black screen and no audio. Signal and everything is fine - I'm not really interested in track info.

and to me, my guide only displaying 2 hours ahead, is a major issue, and a few people seem to be experiencing this.

If you think a R2000-R3000 product not working as designed is fair - well that's up to you.

So - I can't see the guide past 2 hours, I can't use 40+ of the channels, and my HD channel audio is out of sync making it really unpleasant to watch.... yeah, great product  Ask DSTV for a list of current issues, lets see if they give it to you.

Fair enough - but this thread is about the new BABY-PVR which does not have all of those problems you are describing - and it's purchase price is R1999 - no more.

So the "How does it compare" in the title part refers to what?

I'm trying to make it clear that ALL these decoders have their issues - and Multichoice are not quick to fix them, after all, you've spent the money, so you won't just give up on the device once you have it. Look how long series recording on the old PVR took to arrive?

Oh - and I paid R1999 for the 4tuner at Hifi Corp.

There in lies the issue, you bought cheep substandard equipment from "Hi Fi Corruption"..... lolies...

Seriously clueless statement right there... maybe go find out where Hifi Corp gets the decoders from so you can go "lolies" some more.

Why the stopped selling the SD PVR i cant understand.

Lots of people dont have HD tv's and lots of people still want the option of viewing two channels simultaneously.
the answer is xtra-view. Why sell one decoder that has dual view capability when you can sell two decoders that link together for the almost twice has much money. They should at least make a single view sd pvr decoder though

It wouldn't sell.... I don't think they could market a record 1, view 1 SD-PVR for less than R1999 (the cost of the BABY-PVR)

PS: BABY-PVR's are on special at HIFI-CORP this saturday between 9AM and 2PM for R1799...............

I don't see why not they could probably make a singleview SD PVR that could retail for around a 1000

I recon once you've seen a decent HD show - you'd want the HD PVR anyway. The TV quality is just so much better, although I do find DSTVs HD channels not as good as 720p downloaded HD show, but ts still leaps ahead of SD.

Maybe Mutlichoice is trying to get all premium subscribers on the hd pvr before releasing another pvr targeted at compact subscribers.

I really hope they don't release any more hardware until they can fix all their current hardware's issues/

So does the new R1999 HD PVR have the audio sync issue or not?

R1799 at Hifi Corp on Saturday ;)

I have only had audio sync issues when surround sound audio is selected. Otherwise no.

Yeah - think its only surround sound that causes the issue. . . and its only over HDMI AFAIK - optical should be fine.

Apparently two of my issues have been resolved (guide and audio channel), so lets see when I get home.
