Cheaper DStv HD PVR: How does it compare?

Update

then look at getting a modern TV set that is at least HD Ready. These would have multiple inputs (HDMI, component, RCA and maybe even Composite).

Thanks for the reply --sorry I am only getting to it now.

1.) WHY would you want another recorder ??????

So that you can put recorded info onto a mobile format to pass on to your poor cousins.

2.) The TV is a modern HD one with all those inputs.

You can connect the old recorder to the TV using one of the inputs with RCA --
would you not then need some input from the antenna ( LNB ) for the source -- or does that ALL come from the TV -- I think that the RCA wires are white black and yellow ?

Apologies for being so DOF with all this new technology -- helps if you have a full suite of all the bits and pieces to "play" with.

I got the "baby PVR" last week and it seems that lip sync issues are there only on Mnet HD and Discovery HD, not on Supersport HD and all the other SD channels are fine...

I assume this is when dolby digital is on only because i run it to an amplifier through hdmi but after reading these posts I'm pretty sure that is the problem.

try turn off surround sound... kinda defeats the purpose... but seems to fix it in my case.

MC need to bloody hire a decent group of developers...

The current bunch are bloody useless.

As long as they're the ones holding the content we want - they don't care.

I was chatting to my girlfriend over the weekend, one day when proper broadband is available in SA - satellite will be obsolete.

Actually phoned them this morning and the support woman said either play it straight to your TV or go to advanced settings and there is a lip sync delay you can enter, will try it tonight.

My only worry is I delay the lip sync for the dolby channels and that then delays the working non dolby channels... hmmm

+1 Does indeed fix it.......

It fixes it by breaking something else.

The support lady is full of **** - the lip sync delay is there, and it can only be set in one direction, which is the wrong way, so it'll only make it worse.

Game Discount

I'd hoped to see some mention of the CPU inside these units. From user reports here on the forums, the baby PVR is a lot swifter in the menus than the R2,999 unit.

I have the Baby, and I can't say I have any complaints with the speed coming form the SD PVR (it's as fast or faster). No basis for comparison against the bigger HD model.

A friend of mine tells me that in today's Game specials (newspaper advert), they are selling the HD PVR 2P for R1899 and the HD PVR for R2499.

If that is true, then which is the better buy?

I currently don't have dstv and recording on two channels simultaneouslyis not a wow factor for me

I've used record two occasionally and it was nice not to have to worry if the programs clashed...

I am looking forward to DoD too - hopefully an update will be rolled out after the world cup.

Also, as a side note. I woke up this morning and the Baby HD-PVR wouldn't record - it gave an error saying I don't have a subscription for this service. So I bounced it and it came right. Not too worried - first time I have bounced the thing since I had it installed over a month ago. I can live with a reboot once every 6 weeks!
