Cheaper Local from Telkom

this may seem like a silly question but i always wanted to know ... if you have a promotional account and you topup ... so in essence you topup a 3gb with an extra 1gb ... do you now have 30Gb + 10Gb local bandwidth???

I got the e-mail as well, phoned to ask if I could be capped when I reach local "FREE" limit? Was told no, so I replied... well then cancel my account!

They're pulling the we aren't allowed to cap shight....but we will charge you got it then!

It was like this from the beginning they even tried to pull that with international when adsl first came out. As in changing you for what you went over because "you should monitor your usage"

Well I was capped at 3GB this month on the 2GB account....

Why does this pool seem to be getting less and less? Shouldnt it get slightly more and more like G-Mail or something works?

2GB account use to get capped at 4GB then it went to 3.5GB now I got capped at 3.0GB. hmm.. next month 2.5G?

how about not separating local from international?

I have never used more than 1MB of my local cap every month...its a farce, with the price of local hosting and limiting traffic allocation on those hosting accounts; huge numbers of SA domains are hosted overseas..this local cap thing is a joke...only looks impressive on paper -the real "value" is worthless to me anyway... .:p

This whole blended/local thing is a South African thing....I've worked and lived overseas...and I've never come across this type of capping there.

Can only imagine what the income must be on top-ups in SA...astronomical.

Yes but understand that browsing website is not the only thing that the internet is used for. Companies with branches around the country use local only ADSL bandwidth extensively. Why use expensive international accounts for this?

I love the separate accounts.

I still almost always use my local before I finished my blended each month.

I always leave my account active in a capped state on my router and just dial a new connection for international.

Always end up using the 20GB before the 7th|10th of the month. Then carry on with my international until thats done.. usually around 15th or so.

All I can say is I'm stumped....how can I swap you my local for international Gig for Gig....

If you use local for VOIP internally yes or for a Intranet yes.... what was the www meant to do? Connect the world....not force you to "buy in" to local only....its a joke...cache on SA Wide Net...you may as well pay to surf a Intranet if you think SA local bandwidth is a biggie...

Local hosting in SA is way more expensive for SA companies than the overseas equivalent -even in specifications, so now they strong-arm companies here to use local only?

Ever heard of the global village idea? Local is glad nie so lekker nie.

consumer trends differ clearly. I do most of my work on overseas servers, so because I reside in SA I am disenfranchised.

Remember there is a difference between SAIX and IS bandwidth. Especially when using the news servers. Thats the only real reason to use SAIX rather than IS.

all i know is i cant wait for seacom to get here, apparently we'll get a whole lot more bandwidth.....quick question, i only have one adsl account, namely telkom's 1 gig, so i get my 1 gig international and 10 gigs local. is it possible to switch between the local and internatonal usage whenever i feel like? and if yes, how?

Mabye this is a sign that they will start charging now if you go over local cap instead of giving people 50% grace like has been mentioned.

One thing I don't get is that they acknowledge that the regulations say they aren't supposed to charge for local, yet they still do???

AFAIK, the regs say they aren't allowed to cap. Doesn't say they cannot charge.

What is the point of that law? When they did 'cap' local you could buy boosters and now they auto charge you?? Wtf stupid icasa lets hunt them down and take militant action?

yes, the ADSL regs once legislated were a real disappointment *sigh*.

We can thank Paris Mashile, Poison Ivy (RIP), Thabo Mbeki and last but not least the ANC for this engineered mess.
