Actually, an automatic car is not fine. He'll never learn how to pull away and stop smoothly with a manual car if all he has to practise with is an automatic.

First step is to get your learners license.
Then, drive as much as you possibly can, preferably in your own vehicle, else with your friends and family. You might be surprised at how supportive they will be in letting you drive the car when you're going places together. Get as much practical on-the-road in-the-car behind-the-wheel experience as you can. It isn't just about operating the vehicle, it's about becoming confident in how the traffic on the road flows, how other cars move, and how other drivers act.
Once you feel you've done enough driving to not be scared of the idea of being behind the wheel and you are at ease with being on the road in control of a car then you find a driving school that is convenient and has decent rates. You only need to go to them to learn how to drive K53-style and how to pass the test. They do not need to teach you to drive - you've done that. It should only take a few sessions with them to get familiar with the K53 rules and expectations, and to be versed in the details of the drivers' test. For your last session, get the instructor to take you to the testing centre where you will be having your test and take you through the whole thing, as if you were there for the test. Have the instructor drive the road test route with you and have them point out potential tricky areas, speed limits, road hazards, hidden signs, etc. Make sure they show you where the emergency stop will be tested and practice it.
Then you should know absolutely everything you need to in order to pass the drivers' test. You'll have your practical driving experience, know how to deal with traffic and other vehicles, you'll know the K53 rules from observations to hand positions, you'll know how the road test is going to go, and you'll have all the practice and experience you need to pass the yard test. Best of all, it won't have cost you an arm and a leg and a kidney, because you only spent 3 or 4 sessions with the driving school people. It will cost you even less if you take your own vehicle along for the lessons.
Make your own drivers' test booking. Buy your own K53 book. Use a vehicle you are familiar and comfortable with (maybe a friend or family car) for the test. If you really have to use the driving school's car, make sure it's the same car you've driven with them before and that you are very comfortable with. Do not trust the driving school to ensure that the vehicle is compliant with the rules of the test. Do your own checks. I've had friends get failed for idiotic things like having too much tint on the windows - of a vehicle that belongs to the driving school! You're the paying customer, be hardegat. It's your right.
