Cheaper wireless services booming

The community networks are called WUG Wireless User Group. There are WUG's in JHB, CBT, Durban.

How does one become a service provider? My Dad lives in a farming community in Mooi River and there is just no way they can get any other kind of internet other than dial up.

I don't think this article has any relevance to the WUG's as they aren't allowed to provide internet services?

zamrg the below was stated in the article:

Nonprofit community-based wireless networks are proliferating throughout SA, allowing users to communicate, play games, share data and speak to each other using Voice over IP (VoIP.)

We just corrected the article buy calling the non profit community-based networks WUGS.

It is possible for rural areas to get broaddband, but big cost

There is the possibility of taking satelite ( VSAT ) service from Telkom or Sentec.
Then next step is to get a WISP license and begin setting up network on 5Gig frequency.
If most probably will not be financially viable unless there are some neighbors who are prepared to to around R700 a month to get a reasonable service. It also requires a lot of " tech savy " to keep the network operating

Technically it can be done but the cost !

There is also the possibility of using an imersat phone or Thuraya service.

The main issue I have with wireless is that I don't believe you can use multiple providers like you can with DSL. i.e. you get your line from Telkom, but you can buy bandwidth from axxess, cybersmart, webafrica.
i.e. Do you get generic wireless kit and just connect to whomever you feel like/is in your area? Or are you locked in in terms of kit supplied by the WISP?

Most wisps use the same kit, but some wisps are getting clever and "renting" the equipment to the client for a one off fee that's about the same as the cost price of the kit, then charging a higher monthly sub.

This afternoon I'll be on site where the guy owns his equipment, resetting the MikroTik routerboard to factory default and pointing it to one of our high sites. It used to point to another wisp who gave the poor client really bad service.
