Cheapest 1TB drive

Why not wait for the Esquire sale next week 16th? Bound to be some good prices there.

Game has the Samsung 3.5' 1.5TB HDD for R699.Lowest I've seen thus far.

Thanks a stack for that!!!
But I wonder how the samsung drive compares to the seagate 6Gb/s, 5900rpm, 64mb cache for R449 Excl VAT?

I'm considering the Esquire 1.5tb drive with this USB 3 Enclosure for R 119.13 incl vat, total comes to R630.99

Personally I wouldn't trust a USB 3.0 enclosure for R119. They will be using the absolute cheapest components, meaning you suffer in terms of quality. The amount of drives I get that have been in 'cheap' external enclosures that have been fried is worrying. Spend a bit more and get a better quality enclosure, one that won't fry your drive later down the line due to dirty power.

How do you know what a good enclosure is?

Well there's no hard and fast rule, but the same logic apples as in anything else product related. Buy a Tata Indigo for x amount and see how it lasts and wears. Buy a Mercedes for 5 times the price and see how it much longer it lasts and wears a lot better.

You get what you pay for. In most terms the more you pay the better the components you get. Most of the time anyway. So I'd rather spend an extra R200 and get something like a Vantec than a no-name brand.

I actually have a Vantec USB3 enclosure, and its speed sux. I've never had more than 60MB/s from it, and when I plug in the HDD directly in the SATA connector, then I get 100MB/s flat.

Probably the USB-SATA bridge they use.

Sure, I wasn't commenting on any model in particular, or their speeds. Just that I'd rather go for something more expensive as there's less risk of it wrecking the drive.

MA Power enclosures are excellent have sold plenty of them in fact have about 8 at home and never had issues of loosing drives

Is the aluminium Agestar not better? Thought aluminium aids in cooling the drive...

Good to hear. Nice to see some cheaper enclosures at Esquire, since I always felt they were a bit overpriced (perhaps the Manhattan ones if memory serves correct?).

Well they've got to be better than Sahara's PoS 'Whitebox' enclosures. :D Wow. They cannot even spell "enclosure" properly, as printed on the enclosure.

Do you have any good, cheap aluminium enclosures for sale? Couldn't see any in your pricelist...
