Cheapest ADSL data prices ever

The next big move came in March 2010 when MWEB launched affordable uncapped ADSL products, including its entry level uncapped 384kbps service for R219 per month.

Cheapest ADSL data prices ever in South Africa

Recent capped ADSL price cuts mean that South Africans now pay less than 6% of what they did decade ago

I remember an article "Are you killing your ADSL ISP" stating that:

MyBroadband recently established that the minimum basic cost to provide ADSL data is around R6 per GB. However, this cost excludes support, staff costs, and related ISP expenses.

This rate is a lot lower than that which is quoted. If the ISP's are suffering due to their users killing them, how is this price offered?

Over the last four years Afrihost increased its revenue from R14 million to R400 million per year.

That^ I like and illustrates my thinking of build it, price it lower, and they will come. After all the TELECOMS industry is a numbers game.

I just signed up for Afrihosts' 50 gig account. I have been with them many years ago and had a bad experience with their uncapped offerings at the time. The signup process was painless and their client zone is very good indeed. I also liked their app on my iPhone. Now I am thinking of signing up for their uncapped. I hope it is better than the past but sure worth giving them another shot.

The next big move came in March 2010 when MWEB launched affordable uncapped ADSL products, including its entry level uncapped 394kbps service for R219 per month.

Let's not forget that it was DigiChilli, that brought SA the first "affordable uncapped ADSL products", with their R40M investment in the effort, in November 2009.

Great to have seen CambodiaDave posting again in the forum lately. You guys really forced the uncapped price drop onto the players. Well done and your massive effort and sacrifices will not be forgotten. ;)

Again, well done to all at Afrihost for their relentless effort at keeping the prices low, but let's not forget all at Openweb and Vox, who have been right there, all along, in the price war, with Afrihost and MWEB, to bring prices down for our nation.

Also, thank you to all those not mentioned in the article, that played their part in the last few years. Well done!

The ISPs have totally delivered.

Telkom...kinda almost halfway with its free speed upgrades. That barely seems to keep pace of global developments though & they're still charging both line rental and ADSL rental.

On the ISP front...I think the community here (including myself) has to some extent failed to recognise the sacrifices made by the ISPs. Think about it - pretty much every advance we've made was caused by a *single* ISP taking a major fckin hit in a promotion...and then all the others are forced to follow in their tracks. 6 months later its forgotten & the ISP is unpopular again. Then the next one follows the same cycle. Sure we had Seacom & all that stuff...but we all know that cost doesn't determine price. The price is determined by what the market will bear....and the hits described is the only way to drop that fast.

I think they deserve a bit more credit than they receive for long term progress. Pretty much all the major ISPs have participated at some point.
