Cheapest Android Phone?

What's the cheapest Android phone currently available on prepaid?

I Know Vodacom has the HTC Widlfire for R1499, but I think there's a Vodafone clone which is sub 1k?

the Vodafone 858 is the entry level. It goes for a touch under R1000, beware you get what you pay for.

The Vodafone 858 works ok and is feature rich - 3G + Wifi - screen resolution is a tad low

Cool thanks, I just want to use it as a mobile hotspot. The MiFi offers in the market starts at R1800... doesn't make sense if you can get a whole phone for half of that.

Oh and a GPS tracker for my UAV

I got the Vodafone 845 ( it is a Huawei make) for 699.00 end of last year... got it on 30th and was a December 2010 special. Haven't seen them that cheap since, tho there are a few other Android phones that come close. It is not the most WOW phone but my next option at time was a HTC that cost 2500+, so went ahead and got it to keep me going till I can afford to get a higher end model.

Just be aware that mobile phones only create ad-hoc wifi connections that can't be used by many wifi devices (like the kindle, ipad, ipod, etc). I ended up buying a mifi router for this reason.

The cheapest Android phone I would even remotely touch is the Samsung Galaxy Gio.

800MHz. retails for R2k (cellc) and R2.1k Vodacom.

I have one and really worth it.

I've never had a problem with an Android hotspot, anything i've tried connects. I don't think it's a ad-hoc as such.

Nope, I used my HTC Desire and HD for WiFi hotspot for use on my iPad, ASUS Eee Pad and the other phone, never encountered the problem you mentioning?

Oh and iOS devices can connect to Ad-Hock networks that is why they can play with Parrot drone and various tank bots that is normally not supported by Android first.

works perfectly as a hotspot
also has gps which came in handy a few times

Right, sorry for the misinformation. I have that problem with my kindle and while searching for a solution I came across many forum posts of people who had this problem with their blackberries, ipods and iphones, I just assumed the ipad was the same.

Happened to me once. I had to disable something in the WiFi settings that DC's the phone if the WiFi signal wasn't good enough.
