So what about the important specs, like resistive or capacitive display? and cpu and ram?

Vodacom says the device runs on the “latest” Android Operating System, Éclair 2.1.

Errr, that's not the "latest" version of Android. Froyo, anyone?

A few points and questions from an HTC Tattoo owner:

Is the display capacitive like most smart-devices nowadays or is resistive like the Tattoo? It really isn't a total dealbreaker on the Tattoo, but HTC has said that it was probably a bad idea and that they won't be making that mistake again (Hence why the Wildfire is Capacitive). Resistive means cheaper but it's definitely less sensitive and not multi-touch capable (without some serious hax).

QVGA is an uncommon resolution on Android (IIRC, only the Tattoo and Wildfire have that resolution) and consequently it's usually the last one to get "official" support from devs. Most of the time the app works fine on the smaller screen and lower resolution, but developers get lazy and exclude it so that they don't have to test and support it.

Éclair is not the latest version, Vodacom, Froyo is. <facepalm/>

From the pictures it looks like it's going to be skinned by Vodafone, which will probably also mean that it'll have Vodafone unremovable crapware. In other words: Don't expect lots of support and firmware updates, if any.

While I'm all for promoting Android and getting it into as many hands as possible, I dunno...Is this really the way to go?

For R1400 you will have to make some compromises ;) So lets not get over critical :p

I'd be keen to let someone else take the plunge. A colleague would be great, then I can check it out before making a decision.

I miss the old days of being able to have a look at a functional phone in-store before buying.

Yes, for that pricing it is amazing. Hopefully some guys somewhere will release some custom firmware for it.

I must agree, the big question is whether it has a capacitive or resistive touch-screen - so far I can't find anything of the sort.

They already have custom firmware on xda for it.

At this price I will look at it if my phone breaks or get stolen before I can upgrade.

Dammit, wish this phone was out when I upgraded my contract. Was looking for an entry level Android phone :( Maybe I could sell my Samsung Monte... And HTC Touch Diamond... Anyone wanna buy it? :D

Time for us devs to start pumping out the South African Android apps me thinks. We finally might have enough users to make it worth the while.

I have learnt from experience that these stories appear on Mybb about a month or so before the stores receive stock of the featured phone.

24 Home Screens (8 across and 3 up or down), why would you need so many? I can't even use the 3 I have on my Samsung Monte. Seems like a nice phone though... I want one
