I'm hunting for a new laptop for my folks. The two main features that I am after is an i3 processor with a 15.6" screen (a HDMI out would be a nice extra).

Hi-Fi Corporation are selling a Lenovo i3 for R3999, but I'm slightly apprehensive when it comes to buying computer hardware from them because of their relatively poor after-sales service.

Anyone know of any decent laptops with the above specs on sale at the moment at around the R4000 - R4500 mark (in the Cape Town area)?

Thanks.

Well the way laptops works as far as i know is you would not be dealing with hi fi corp if something went wrong.

Say you buy acer from a random pc shop, that is where it ends. You then deal with acer directly. You should check out esquire hey, they have good pricing on laptops and good brands as well.

For that spec & price range laptop, you'll have to hunt for bargains. Currently I don't know of any bargains of this kind :(

The cheapest i3 laptop that I know of at the moment is the LG one at DionWired.

DionWired actually had that LG laptop (that Yotch posted) for R3000 last Monday.

A couple of months ago (in Oct 2011) I purchased the following laptop from Esquire:

That quote of R3000 was just a special for Monday the 12th Dec ... see the big 1 DAY ONLY description at the top.

HP and Dell both offer next business day support.

Before you buy, just confirm by calling HP, but for around R500-R800 you can purchase a care pack which will bump the laptop to 3 year warranty with next business day support.

Meaning if it breaks they come over and fix it.

If you had said something a while back, Esquire had a Lenovo B570 for ~R4000, which has a Core i3-2310M (Sandy bridge). Probably the best looking and quality looking laptop in it's price class I saw this year. The only laptop I would take over that one is an HP Probook 4530s or HP Probook 4730s because they are made of aluminium with a very nice finish and damn good price considering the finish and specs.

If you can aim to get a Sandy Bridge CPU (any CPU that starts with 2, see Lenovo example above). The CPU is faster than previous generation but the most important part is the motherboard supports faster SATA if you are considering getting an SSD it is a massive bonus.
