On a more thread related note, are these local bitfarm, news sites etc fast enough to keep one supplied with decent stuff throughout the month? I have seriously been considering dropping DSTV in favour of some local cap and just downloading whatever is out there.

Might give it a bash for a month with the OpenWeb deal just to try it out.

That would be R130 for ~15Gb (p2p- other okes get some of my stuff??).

That down from ~R500 is pretty decent. Might as well make it R260 for ~30GB actual content received. Sure that is enough to keep me going for a month?

What you okes think? This worth it? If I throw that kind of cash (local GB) at it, and am prepared to accept a sizeable proportion of uploads, where is a good place to start??

To answer your question, I have 2x30gig local IS accounts and finished the second one on Monday and keep in mind that I left SA for a week during this month, so I would say there is more than enough Linux ISOs :D to download.

What download speeds are you getting on the IS account? Do you get your "Linux ISO's" through usenet? How does it compare to the speeds off the SAIX usenet connections.

If the speeds are the same I would rather be on IS as it's about R4.33/G for local there instead of R19 (webafrica) /R12 (axxess). About a year ago I was on IS but couldn't take the slow download rates (10-11 ??? compared to 38-39 ??? on SAIX).

Is it prepaid and when does it expire?
 
I have a WiMax connection. Had a prepaid WA local account (saix) and then bought the 30gig IS local account and speeds on both are the same. I haven't used the IS accounts with newshost, but that's because newshost is so slow. On the torrents, I don't see a speed difference and it depends on how many seeds there are, but I normally get full speed, which is 60kb/s download and 30kb/s upload.

Skyway is still the cheapest! I mean you pay R5 extra and get a free 2GB of international. After that you get 30GB local. I can't understand why the hell people want to buy the stupid WA local only accounts. Its a rip off!!
 
M-WEB has a offering that cannot be beat @R199 for 1GIG International and 10GIG local(it's actually uncapped local)
dont think that can be beaten :)
 
@cavedog - The thing with that account is that you have to use the int first before you can start using the local.

@delta66 - Not sure if I should share this :D but my IS local accounts lets me surf and dl international for some reason and I can download int torrents. :D

What is the problem with that? 2 Gigs free international to use up at the start of every month...

More of a bonus than a problem.
 
yes there is no problem but if you want the account for local only then there will be no need for that international.
 
But it is free!!!

If its not used for international, surely it will at least be used for local, resulting in a 32GB cap.

Can anyone share their experience (frequency of server downtime, download speeds, etc.) with usenet download speeds on IS accounts. The "Linux ISO's" I want/need are on usenet

I'd like to compare the cost to speed differences of IS and SAIX based downloads through usenet on and ADSL line.

I realised that the newshost site was started mainly to inform others about which files were cached on the IS server. as it still exists I can only presume that the speed of uncached files are still considerably slower than through SAIX accounts.
