Cheapest PS3 Anyone?

Sigh. I just dont understand why PS3 owners go berserk when the system they own is shown as lacking in some areas. I've see this kind of behaviour from other PS3 gamers.

Funny but it seems X360 owners dont mind the flak they get. I suppose games & fun are more important to them. ;)

@Brawler:

Hey Brawler,

I see you from EL. Nice :)

Have you even seen a PS3 before? Well regardless, seeing as though we from the same town, how would you like to see first hand what the PS3 can do? I'll make time and give you a free demo if you want, and you can mess around with it for a bit as well.

If you interrested, just pop me a PM and include your number, and I'll buzz you and we can set something up.

Cheers :)

Geez guys, agreed that scotty goes overboard but that wouldn't happen if you didn't taunt him. The thread was originally asking where's the best place to buy PS3s not please have a pissing contest as to who has the better console. You're entitled to your opinion but I've noticed you can't let a PS3 related thread go by without the normal run down.

FX since you are the local PS3 pundit maybe you can help me out..

I am trying to find out how the PS3's online ability works in South Africa. Not the shop or any of that crud just the gaming..

Say you want to play a game of Motorstorm, how easy is it to get online and play and what is the lag like?

Well as flattering as the "pundit" label is, I'm really just someone who took the time to get to know, understand, and appreciate the positive points about the PS3, that's all. And at the risk of being labelled a "fanboy" I might add.... but this is the sad state of gaming in SA at the moment, so it's par for the course and doesn't bother me much anymore.

Anyhow, sure I'll give you the rundown......

I've only ever played Resistance and Motorstom online and both experiences have been good. Both multiplayer elements can be reached via normal navigation of menu's until the "lobby's" appear. The lobby lists contain all the hosted games around that region. I mean if I log onto the "European" server, all the hosted races/matches will be shown there.

There after it's a simple case of choosing the map you want to play on and waiting until they finish their current game so that you can join in.

Resistance was quite an eye opener though because I've only ever played against overseas people and the lag was as "good" as playing on a local SGS server. It came as a pleasant surprise. Motorstorm was just as good. Now I've played a LOT more of Motorstorm, and lag is not an issue at all. Check with IvanX360 from XB forums, we've played together several times and have not experienced any lag whatsoever. At most, I've seen a guy warp a few metres ahead then appear normal with no warping for the rest of the race at all. I have not tried the latest Motorstorm patch, but from what I've read, the net code has been improved even further.

Oh wait I played Calling All Cars a couple of days ago, but there is nothing special to mention there. The online experience was pretty much the same as above. Connect - Lobby - Join Map - Wait - Play. One thing that I noticed while playing CAC was there wasn't even the normal warping that online people experience. Was very good.

Now I'm not sure about the hosting itself..... why I say that is because if a local (from SA) hosted a 12 man race, I would suspect that lag would be encountered by pretty much everybody - assuming he has a normal port shaped DSL line. So now because there has been NO lag whatsoever, I can only assume that the hosting takes place on overseas servers with the broadband capacity to be able to handle that amount of players. So in essence, if a player chooses to host a game, I believe that he in fact "facilitates" that specific match by setting up the match details, without actually "hosting" the physical game. But I stand to be corrected on that one but I would be very surprised if he did actually host the game himself.

Hope this makes sense because it can get pretty confusing!

If a stranger came up to you and asked you where a particular well known old grocery store was, but you knew that particular store overcharged, had shocking service, the stock was old, he's likely to get mugged and there was a better option nearer by what would you do?

I reckon Scotty would send him along and laugh at him under his breath, probably go by later to see if there were any pieces left to pick at. ;) Me? I'd give him directions but suggest he try the other store rather. He has every right to ignore me, he may have a particular reason for wanting to go to that store, but at least he's aware of his options and can make an informed choice. Am I invasive? Probably a bit, but saving the guy some pain could be worth it.

BTW, by the time we chipped in the question had been asked and answered.

And Scotty as I've said before, you can call me whatever names you like, I really don't care and have seen far more creative slurs than yours, but I DO have a vested interest in more people getting xbox's. unlike the PS3, a huge % of gaming on the 360 is online with other people, the more the merrier, and with ADSL now as cheap as MWeb dial-up we're going to see an explosion of online gaming. Funnily enough it's the playstation convertees that are the most enamoured with Live, and there are lots of them.

@FX - hopefully it's the other way round - the int servers will matchmake and the 'host' will run the actual game. You should give it a go because local peer bandwith isn't shaped, and I know a standard 384 line can handle about 4 -5 cars in burnout revenge, 512k can do 8 (game max), so I'm sure you could get a pretty good game on.

Comparing consoles to a dangerous, overpriced grocery store? Good lord man! You're certainly losing the plot.

I think I know that Grocery Store.

@Scotty, I'm sure you are a decent guy, but you are comming over as a bit oversensitive at the moment. I didn't see 360 fans comming to pick a fight. Of course they (we) are irritating at them moment. The 360 is winning. Maybe(hopefully) you will get a chance to go nahnahnah later. I can see how it can get irritating, but how about adopting an internal calm based on your faith in the underdog? Jumping in with both feet, calling people idiots and such isn't cool and really isn't going to get anyone to lay off you.

This is the only part where you lost me, do you choose what server you logon to or does it default to your local region without the option?

AFAIK the PS3 uses dedicated servers to host games where the Xbox 360 generally uses P2P and someone is the host...

I think both have their advantages and disadvantages personally.

I would worry about the requirement to have unshaped bandwidth for the PS3 since you are always on international traffic, also the ability to only play with locals seems to be stifled.

However on the Xbox 360 side, the host eats through their bandwidth horribly and also gets a no-lag advantage which can be frustrating in competitive games.

hmm it seems that I may have side tracked this topic again :o

However I am sure FX would agree you should be buying your PS3/Xbox 360 from BtGames anyway...

ROFL!.. Xbox vs PS3 again...sigh..

Listen guys...I think the dude is fully aware of the big price difference, he just wants to know where can get the cheapest PS3... So as far as I could undestand... Ps3 is thing they want .. why try to convince him otherwise?

@lazyassedgamer <=====um that was a joke btw :D

Oh right I should have mentioned that before. Just after you login to "online" play you get an option for European or US servers. THEN, you get to the lobby screen showing all the hosted games depending on what region you've chosen.

That's the way I understand it as well.

True, but if seeing is believing, then you need to see for yourself how little lag there is even on a shaped account like mine.
The thing is, if you look at the two performances of local P2P versus overseas dedicated hosting, I would assume the local P2P would win hands down. But in reality, this is not the case at all, in fact it's quite the opposite. But given my experience in online gaming lately, if Sony had to ask me which direction to go, I would say "don't fix it if it ain't broke".
Also another point to consider is my personal geographical location as well, I'm in EL, so theoretically the experience should be slightly more flawed due to the long distance from CT/JHB right? Right. But it's never been an issue so far. I can only sum it up to being good net code, and powerful hosting servers.

Oh and yes, sorry Kro for jacking your thread. :(

Ah that is cool, so you get to choose to either play with Americans or not.. What a bonus.

Shaped as well, I have only heard great things about the PS3's online gaming when it comes to lack of lag.... The more cynical would say it's because not many people are doing it but Sony do seem to have done a fantastic job.

I would still love to get a PS3, but at that price it's just not feasible at the moment... anyone willing to donate

Hi-Fi corp have a weekend special for the PS3 @ R6279. Just saw the specials on todays newspaper.

oh god, another fight! :(. Ok you guys want to hear my idea's-well here you go!

Yes so what if the box is winning (now)? in the long run, the ps3 is better future wise.

As for online, I couldn't be happier that it's free, yes, it's not as developed as the box's but it's getting close(ok, there still is loads of work), and the funny thing is, i wouldn't pay $50+ to play online. Yes so I'm a cheap skate ;), what can i do? The funny thing is, I don't give a dam if the ps3's network isn't as great as the box's, IT"S FREE!!!

The games: well sure, they aint that many, but i can't afford 10 games, i'm barely able to get 1 a month! The quality of the games now, aren't the best, but it has been out for less then the box, so i'm not surprised, but they are catching up.

Yes, I am sorry for ridiculing you xbox fan's, but you kinda are pushing my buttons, that well, you could lay off with the whole PRO BOX thing just a tiny bit ;). @doobiwan, it was a very nice story about the store, and sure i would give him directions to the store he wants to go to because he was being specific, if he said "where's the store from here?" i would kindly send him off to the better/safer store.

Now what i've always wanted was peace, lord knows why they bundled the xboxer's with the playstallions? But i guess a fight breaks tension... Now if I play nicely, will you guys play nicely?

Future wise : Yes. Currently : No. I played it safe and got it before the price went up. It wont go down for sure in 2007.

Online :$50 per YEAR. You pay more for parking in 4 months in SA. LIVE is currently way ahead of PSN's effort and well worth the money IMO.

For now PSN is pathetic with the EU portal getting nothing. We have to resort to download stuff from the US or JPN PSN networks simply coz the EU gets shafted everytime by Sony.

My 2 cents.

Have you ever thought that a company that can give away 5 ps3`s perhaps has employees that can afford those 20k HD-TV`s?
