Hi,

I am looking a the cheapest decent smartphone available, to use as a spare phone when travelling.

The Vodafone Smart Mini seems the cheapest, but I cannot seem to find stock of it anywhere in Durban.
Does anyone know where I could get one or alternatively recommend something similar in specs and price?

MTN Steppa at Pep Stores, R499

Thanks for all the input.
I managed to find a Vodafone Smart Mini.
Some Edgar's branches still have stock for R799, while some Vodashops have it for R1099.

Double-post gremlin is back

How's the phone?? Nice? I thought of getting it when my old phone was in for repairs... Luckily the phone was ready the next day :)

It seems ok, will only be using it properly from next week, will leave some feedback thereafter

But in terms of quality?? Also saw a Galaxy Star at R700... Could be good

For R500 with better specs then a more expensive Samsung and the normal two year warranty, worth it in my opinion.

Just bought a Huawei Ascend Y300 for my mom for R999 at Jet
Seems decent for a first android phone. Dual core and 4" screen.

How does it compare in terms of performance with your old P970?

It seems pretty close on paper, I haven't used it for a while as its been "dead" in my drawer for some time now,
and unfortunately haven't used the y300 much either so cant give a decent comparison.
will do some benchmarks in a few days and post it here.

Not a fan of the huawei launcher with no app drawer, but that can be solved by using any of the ones from the playstore

@rodga - or anyone else who either owns or has access to the Y300.
I bought one yesterday. Generally pleasantly surprised, and like the 'cylinder' option for app scrolling in 'transitions'.

Don't like under Storage, the option where you have to pick between Internal or SD Card as the Default Storage Location, and the warning that comes up when you choose one or the other. Find this pointless, and if someone can explain to me why they bother setting it up this way, I'd appreciate it.

Of more concern, is the fact that when recharging & it gets to about 90 % full, the yellow light goes to green before full charge is reached. What's the point of that ? Surely green light should indicate phone is now fully charged ?
If you feel that it's a fault of MY phone, and not a standard thing with the Y300, please let me know, as I'm well within the 7-day return policy for a new one, no questions asked (apparently).

Will find out about the charging thing and let you know.
Choose SD card for storage as the internal storage is not big and will get filled up quite quickly.
Dont like the stock luancher, Apex works better imo.

Thanks for quick response - had selected SD Card already, though unless device is rooted, even some downloaded apps can't be moved across (what I've found). I had an older version of Nova launcher on Desire S, but the latest version I deleted immediately due to 2 big icons on home page with options (can't even remember now what they said, and couldn't hide them).
Will try Apex or similar, next.

Await feedback on the charging as soon as you can, as very interested in the answer.

My Huawei Ascend P6 also changes from yellow to green at 90% so there's nothing to be alarmed about it there. I also installed Apex Nova on the P6 as I found the stock launcher too cramped. Just be careful with SD card as storage as I've already had 1 Transcend SD card crash in mine already and I lost my stuffs but I think the SD card was dodgy.
