Cheapest Smartphone?

Huawei phone discussion continued ..

@Fox1 - I swopped the previous phone for a new one, and it does the same (@ 90% battery light indicator goes green, as well), so must be a standard thing across their devices.

After testing as much as I can think of on this new one, finding that for data usage to indicate (anything), I have to restart the phone & then when I do, the graphics display but most recent date of usage is only up to the 6th Feb., but I've used Wi-Fi this morning & it won't let me select a later date range. Not too serious as I don't rely on it for checking data used, but is a bit of an irritant, especially as a new phone. Could download an app if I wanted to, I'm sure.

I also installed Apex Nova on the P6 as I found the stock launcher too cramped.

In J/Bean (and up?), are you aware you can drag an icon into another one, which creates a folder into which you can move as many icons from the various screens, as you like?
I've now created 2 folders this way with similar, largely unused icons, so have freed-up so much space that was then able to delete 2 entire screens, so now only have 4 screens in use. I really like the Huawei home & other screen setup now, especially with that cylindrical transitions effect.

I'm using a Samsung 8GB card that came with my old Desire S, so hopefully it'll continue to be reliable. Apps/App list backed up to AppBrain so not too concerned if I lose use of the card.

All things considered, the Y300 isn't a bad phone but don't think I'll ever again buy a phone with only 512MB RAM, as it struggles in that department. However, think I'd of needed to spend up to R1k more for a phone with 1GB, so will live with it.

Not a fan of the stock Huawei launcher. I prefer to have a dedicated app drawer. That's was the only reason for using apex.

Thanks for quick response - had selected SD Card already, though unless device is rooted, even some downloaded apps can't be moved across (what I've found). I had an older version of Nova launcher on Desire S, but the latest version I deleted immediately due to 2 big icons on home page with options (can't even remember now what they said, and couldn't hide them).
Will try Apex or similar, next.

Await feedback on the charging as soon as you can, as very interested in the answer
.

I've noticed my phone will display 100% charge, but when I check on the resident app it informs me that the battery is still 'trickle charging' and will be doing so for anything up to an hour.

There is some very useful info at this site that explains why different battery charge states are experienced:

@I O U - Yep, I use the drag icons into folder feature but I was referring to the margins between rows and columns being too less on my homescreen.

About the low memory issued, you should try an app called "Swapper 2". It uses your SD Card as a type of virtual memory and swaps items in and out of memory as required.

Thanks, will definitely do so today.
Think I/someone else who owns a Y300 must start a thread, but I may get to only in March.

Oops, the app is called Swapper. Swapper 2 is a bogus app in the app store :/

Had a look at Swapper 2 last night; as it said it's for rooted phones only & had some warnings about SDCard loss, thought better stay away, anyway. Will look at getting Swapper later on - thanks.

Just bought a Huawei Ascend Y300 for my mom for R999 at Jet
Seems decent for a first android phone. Dual core and 4" screen.
Any one have any idea who i can contact to find out if JET has stock in CT?
Pref Southern Subs

Thanks

i just bought a y300 im really happy even came with a 4gig card in the box
sgs2 is going in the bin its more buggy than an alpha version of software
for 1k i dont think you can get better value anywear

Did the S2 also retail at R999? The Huawei Ascend Y300 is the best value for money entry level smart phone currently available--feel free to go and look at the phones on the market and compare them.......the next best bet is probably a Nokia 520, which retails at double the price.
Well done Huawei!

2 days after the warrentee expires the phone goes all wonky
random reboots shutting down etc
upgraded version of android to 4.0.4
