So heres the deal... 3 months back we signed up for the Telkom promotion for the 1meg line and free install, blah blah. Now the deal is over and I need to find an ISP. Dad is looking for cheapest possible cost... I'm looking for uncapped. ;)

Now, I would like to download and I don't mind being stuck to downloading from 12am - 7 am, as I see some ISPs do (Backbone dependant, right?). Also, I'm planning to get an Xbox soon so some gaming/downloads for this should be taken into consideration (although not important)

So, I've noticed that getting a line included in the package also decreases cost... But I've also heard that its stupid to get tied down. Other than that reason, is there any other not to get an inclusive line ? Cause my dad would really like costs as low as possible :erm: Would I be able to cancel the contract at any point ?

Basically, what I need is the cheapest uncapped offering all inclusive. Failing to get an acceptable price range, I'll probably be getting a capped service. :( Any other info you think might be useful would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mweb is R349 all incl. You will get JUST SURF accounts meant for only browsing at around R99, remember your adsl line rental is already R152, at reduced prices at ISP's the adsl line rental go for +-R140.

If you are on capped, Afrihost is R19 per gig. My friend is on PC Format for his adsl data at R10 per gig I think. There are really alot of options though.

Do you really want to save a few bucks for the pain of having to deal with multiple companies and their lack of interoperability when you need anything done to the line? Although the ISP bills you for the line, they don't manage the infrastructure. So when you need maintenance done, who do you deal with?

OP should downgrade from 1mb to 384k if he wants the R152 line rental and I don't think he will like it.

Everytime I had problems with my line, I went straight to the Telkom Direct store even though my line is with Cybersmart. I don't see how it makes such a big difference. The problem gets solved one way or the other.

It is however a pain to cancel with an ISP if they control your line. I heard stories of people canceling with ISPs where the ISP decide to cancel the DSL line as well.

Well the thread does say 384k all inclusive it does not say "1mb".

Ah, thanks guys. Yes, I do intend on downgrading to 384. I have used that speed before, wasn't so bad. Beggars can't be choosers. :) The cheapest deal I can find is the new WA Uncapped but the AUP looks horrible !!!!! I'll see if I can make my dad increase the budget. Failing this, I'll just buy capped data. Thanks for the input.

Simplest for you would be to just get MWEB. Plain and simple.

Agreed! What bothers me most is the rolling 6 hour window with 300 Meg max before (downgrading on priority = throttling). If you want to download the odd CD iso, this could now easily take 12 hours instead of the normal 4.5, inviting all kinds of errors to slip in, in which case you have to start over from scratch.

I also see that the reason given for these rules is "to protect the users from each other". No mention is made of the REAL reason, which is the high wholesale cost of bandwidth enforced by Telkom, forcing all ISP's to make such rules in order to stay in business.

At 384k, you wont get the best speeds at all. If speed is important, you might want to consider 8ta and get the extra 10gb after midnight add on.

And you can even get a 3g router that would connect just fine to the xbox...

Aha, thats looking like the only real option now. R152 just for the ADSL line takes away much of the budget that could be used for cap. I just need to check the signal strength of one of those speed stick things at my house. We're sitting at the very edge of the coverage zone. Where would I find such a 3G router ? Any good models that you know of ?

Look for the Tenda 3G611R+ Router or the TP-Link MR3220 Router. Both great devices. You can also PM me for a good price if you decide to buy the router.
