Cheapest uncapped ADSL prices in SA

LOL, I pay R199 for a 4mbps line and is still the best I tested...have been paying that price for almost a 1.5 years now!

Interesting note on my ISP, MWEB on a 4Mbps line

Generally very good for streaming, not often I have a problem here, seems it is more when say Youtube don't have local cached content that the traffic slows down.

On torrents, seems this is throttled until the late hours and then left open until morning which is fair enough in my book, I just wish they would be clear about this policy since they also have the FUP on total bandwidth - I don't think it so fair to do both.

Fam two blocks away have gone from Afrihost to Crystalweb 4Mbps (we're on the same exchange roughly the same distance away from it) and so far the reports have been pretty good. I will try do some testing on both simultaneously to get a better idea during December and post some feedback.

I can vouch for MWeb 10mb Uncapped. Consistently great. It's just one of those products that works so well, you forget you even have it.

that looks like incredible connection pricing. not sure if i will say it is the best though..

Yea no. The 'cheapest uncapped' deals can just as easily be called the 'worst quality ADSL' deals.

Why? You don't have to care about caps. So uncapped is pretty accurate

Not the way it is managed, with throttling, shaping and FUP/AUP. Therefore I think MANAGED is more accurate than UNCAPPED.

I've never noticed any throttling or shaping. As for a fair usage policy, I cant imagine any service that wouldn't be subject to fair usage rules. Otherwise you will have people abusing the service

I am not arguing the merits of fair use, merely the use of term UNCAPPED, which to my mind conveys the notion of unrestricted. One of the dictionary meanings of uncapped is "to free from limits or restrictions". Hence my argument that MANAGED is a more fair reflection of the service offered, because it does have parameters that govern/control it.

Uncapped doesn't imply no restrictions. It implies that there aren't caps.

An unrestricted service would be ridiculous

So are all uncapped services truly uncapped by your definition?
I know some "uncapped" services specify a GB value/limit in their FUP.

I was on the IC 2mbps uncapped for 2 years. It would be heavily shaped during 8am-5pm but after that it was full steam ahead.

I have migrated from uncapped to capped, and have never regretted it. I am not suggesting this is a solution for all - there are many for whom uncapped is perfect - I just don't think the service is well understood by the average user, and part of the blame has to be with the way it is marketed.

If I can watch iTunes/Netfli/Hulu in HD without issues for 5-6 hours a day, then I would say absolutely. Hell, I have no idea even how many GB I use a month. If doing that (Which I would consider fair usage) causes you to reach a limit, then no.

* while being able to use apps such as mail, safari, twitter etc unhinderd

If this is what all uncapped users experience, irrespective of ISP, then you have a valid point. My experience has been different, and with much lighter usage than yours, I have been throttled to the point where my service became unusable (even for basics services like email). From what I have read on the forums, other uncapped users have had similar types of issues.
Hence my argument is definitional, suggesting the service (certainly the one I have experienced) is more accurately described as managed.

I have never had something like that happen to me. Wifi just works perfectly all the time. You never even think about it, much you you don't think about the air your breath. But then again, that is MWeb. I can't vouch for other internet providers.

Are you sure you weren't using bittorrent or other services that are associated with piracy? Because I imagine any ISP would shut the pipes down pretty quickly if that was the case
