hi guys i'm sure this has been asked already, but prices are always changing so if everyone can give their 2 cents that'd be AWESOME!

ok so i'm a student, moving into a commune with my friends. theres about 6 of us and we're willing to put in R100 each for internet next year(maybe R150.00 each). i'd like to know what's the best we could get for about R600.00? uncapped is preffered and a decent line speed would be awesome too.

thanks for the help guys.

Hi,

The Best you can get with R600 is an uncapped unshaped Lite Account from Openweb (http://www.openweb.co.za/index_uncapped.asp?Selected=2). That is R179 per month. You will need to take out an ADSL Line from Telkom (R152 per month) and since the line can't go without a voice line, you will need to take out a voice line too (+-R150). You will need an ADSL Modem to get ADSL (If you do not have one yet, R600 for everything is not enough, you will need a bit more).

I strongly Suggest you people put in R150 rand per month. That means you have R900 per month. You will be able to afford a 1Mbps ADSL Line + account (from MWEB) and a voice line + Modem. I hear if you sign a contract with mweb for 12 months you get a free modem, i dont know if students can take out modems.

R600 = 384kb ADSL
R900 = 1Mbps ADSL

1mb should be fine if everyone is just "browsing". doubt that much

yes....uhm we're students so more downloading then browsing :) but the price is unfortunate. telkom are rapists. suppose i'l haveto have a chat with the guys. but thanks for feedback everyone

If you pool/queue your downloads and not do individually and also not at peak times, then it could work - 1Mb. If you keep a steady flow of content to watch, people will be less likely to stare at computer screens all day (assuming you all don't need access to online content for studies).
You can also copy from friends and fellow students to lessen the load (talking about linux distros of course :)).
