Checking SMTP

Does anyone know how to check if the SMTP is working for emails?

Just had a HUGE lightning storm come through this end of the world, and I unplugged everything in time, and plugged back in when it went away.

However nobody in our office can currently send any emails, we can receive, and browse the internet, but all outgoing emails via SMTP time out?

Hmmm, just changed my SMTP from my international address to a local address, and now it works

SAIX was having some BIG problems with smtp.saix.net this week...but I think it was tuesday
