Just helping a friend pick a car and he is interested in the Chevrolet Aveo Hacthback.

I had a look and they have the Sedan for the same price as the hatch.
Am i missing something or is that how cars go these days?
Why would anyone go for the hatch?

'06, granted, but I doubt they would've learnt much in 3 or 4 years.

It is a horrid, horrid little car in my view. What budget are we talking? New/used?

The quote he got was for R120 000 for the 1.6l model. So i am guessing somewhere around there. And i think he is only interested in new.

Not with a wife and 2 kids :p.

Fair enough, although and Aveo will be a squeeze with a wife and two kids too.

This is where i was thinking the sedan would be a better option? Or would there only be the bigger boot space?

No other opinions then?

 Thank ESKOM - 90 minutes without power.

Friends don't let friends buy Aveos. R120k is a fair bit of money & will buy a very decent 2nd hand car, depending on what his requirements are. That being said, just about anything - save something Chinese or Indian - would be a better bet.

I am sure ESKOM is thanking you right now for saving that 90 minutes worth of power, even if it was not you intention :D.

And i will get him to have a look around for a second hand car.

Hatches generally have MORE storage space than Sedans because you can pack "higher" than you can in a boot.
I've also always been a fan of Hatches because you can just reach over the back seat and access the stuff in the boot. (Being able to flip down a back seat in a sedan and stick one arm through and dig for whatever you're trying to reach doesn't do it for me).

in a hatch, flip the rear seats down and you've got quite a large, high space in which you can pack stuff or load stuff and move it around. There's no way you're going to fit that washing machine in the back of your sedan, even if you take the back seats out completely.

Regarding the Chev Aveo.. I can't say much about it except that I think it's a bit of a cheap car, and it isn't worth R120k, even if it is new.
Rather go for a Honda Jazz - they're very nice and spacious, drive like a dream, and don't feel cheap inside. Yes, a new one is about R150k, but a second-hand Jazz for R120k will still be a much nicer car (in my very uninformed, impromptu opinion) than a brand new Chev Aveo.

But then again, you need to go for the vehicle that makes your heart beat that tiny bit faster when you look at it.

Do point him in the direction of the EuroNCAP crash test I linked earlier. Even though it's the previous generation, it makes for sobering reading - a car doesn't go from 2 stars to 5 in one generation.

2nd hand Polo, Jazz, Fiesta, Corsa even - it's not difficult to do better than an Aveo. ;)

Opel Corsa, Hyundai i20, Fiesta, Jazz, Polo even Figo, Vivo, Fiat 500
ANYTHING other than an Aveo!

I did point him in the direction of the i20 but he said that they could not offer it to him without a balloon payment and no deposit.

Chevy is offering that Aveo for R2700 for 72 months (for the ls i think) with no deposit and no balloon.

Stay way from anything VAG - they are boring as hell and recently their quality took a dip especially in the bottom segment where all the Polows are.

The Aveo is not a bad car, that is why a lot of them are still in use by rental companies. They are reliable but it has to be said a bit boring too. For the money I would opt for something a little safer and newer, like the new Spark or an i10. If you don't mind going used then you can pick up a Corsa 1.4 Enjoy with all the bells and whistles like cruise control and more for about the same money.

He will point you towards a 4th hand Tata or Chery QQ in an attempt to get you away from a VW.

The man has a problem
