China's first female astronaut and two other crew members emerged smiling from a capsule that returned safely to Earth Friday from a 13-day mission to an orbiting module that is a prototype for a future space station. The Shenzhou 9 parachuted to a landing on the grasslands of the country's sprawling Inner Mongolia region at about 10 a.m. (0200 GMT). China declared the first manned mission to the Tiangong 1 module a major stride ahead for the country's ambitious space program. About an hour later, mission commander and veteran astronaut Jing Haipeng, 45, emerged from the capsule, followed by crew mates Liu Wang, 43, and 33-year-old Liu Yang, China's first female astronaut. The three, all experienced air force pilots, were lifted on to folding chairs and appeared in good health. They smiled, waved, chatted and saluted as state television ran live footage from the landing site.

Impressive timeline - wonder where they'll be in the next 10 years.

Very soon Mars will be capitalist while maintaining its disguise as a red planet.
LOL

In all seriousness. Their progress is impressive. I hope the Americans are paying attention, these guys may well catch up on them pretty soon. How long did it take the Yanks to catch up and surpass the Rooskies in the 60s? 8 years? 10? China is definitely one to watch.

The Americans were always ahead of the Russians when it came to the tech. The Russians put a football sized object into to space that went beep because they thought the Americans were about to launch a satellite - which they did about 6 months later. It also went beep and also measured radiation. The Russians put a living creature into space and cooked it on the way up (a dog, Laika) and then they put a man into space but according to the rules governing what spaceflight meant, Gargarin did not land with his capsule - he bailed out.

The Russians basically used a military rocket to launch payloads but it was actually a failure as a weapon. It took forever to fuel.

The benefit to the Americans of Russia going first was that it set a precident that space does not belong to any nation. The Russians would have bitched big time if the Americans had put a satellite up. Sputnik meant that the Americans could launch their own without the bleating from Khrushchev. Eisenhower was also pretty nervous about the message being sent of the USA using a military weapon in space so, by some accounts, he ordered Medaris to fill the American's rocket with ballast.

Dam Firefly was right.

In da future we all gonna speak a English/Mandarin mix.
